NEW YORK, July 21, 2026, 5:12 p.m. EDT
QuantumScape approaches Wednesday’s earnings with a closing market capitalization of $3.70 billion, which is 4.1 times its cash and investments as of the end of March. By comparison, two other publicly traded battery developers ended the day trading at roughly 1.2 times.
The investor challenge lies in that gap. As of March 31, QuantumScape had not generated revenue from its primary operations. Its valuation relies on successful pilot-line performance, meeting milestone targets, and anticipated royalties.
The stock climbed 2.7% to $6.05 on Tuesday during standard Nasdaq hours. Trading for the day concluded at 4 p.m. EDT, with after-hours trading still available. From July 10 to July 17, shares declined by 10.9%.
QuantumScape is scheduled to publish its second-quarter earnings after markets close on Wednesday. The earnings call begins at 5 p.m. EDT. Analysts’ preliminary consensus projects a loss of 18 cents per share.
The anticipated loss might not be the main concern. Investors are seeking tangible advancement from the Eagle Line pilot facility. Management intended to increase QSE-5 cell production this quarter.
A comparative look at the balance sheets highlights the difference in valuations:
| Company | Market value | Liquid holdings | Market value to liquid holdings | Market value less liquid holdings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuantumScape NASDAQ:QS | $3.70 billion | $0.905 billion | 4.1x | $2.79 billion |
| Solid Power NASDAQ:SLDP | $0.513 billion | $0.435 billion | 1.2x | $0.078 billion |
| SES AI NYSE:SES | $0.209 billion | $0.178 billion | 1.2x | $0.032 billion |
Market capitalisations are based on Tuesday’s close. Liquid assets represent the sum of disclosed cash and investments or securities. March 31 figures and computations have been rounded.
QuantumScape’s $2.79 billion gap stands at about 26 times greater than the total gap among peers. The figure does not reflect enterprise value, and does not account for liabilities, other assets, or differences in business models.
Solid Power posted $3.1 million in first-quarter revenue and grant income. SES AI recorded revenue of $6.7 million. QuantumScape reported no principal-business revenue.
QuantumScape reported liquidity of $904.7 million at the end of March. The company’s operating cash outflow for the first quarter totaled $59.5 million, while its net loss stood at $100.8 million.
Management disclosed customer billings totaling $11.0 million, noting that this figure does not represent GAAP revenue. The most recent annual guidance forecasted an adjusted EBITDA loss ranging between $250 million and $275 million.
The PowerCo initiative allows for contributions totaling as much as $130.7 million. Disbursements are linked to achieving technical milestones and meeting other targets associated with the project. The prospective license would include an initial royalty payment of $130 million, contingent upon certain conditions.
Production and field data are now central to execution. In April, Chief Executive Siva Sivaram and CFO Kevin Hettrich stated: “The next phase is field testing.” QuantumScape scheduled Q2 production to back customer programs. SEC
Wednesday’s update may underpin the premium by providing detailed data on throughput, quality, and shipments. Delays in field testing or lower-than-expected billings would challenge it. There is no one EPS number that resolves the issue.
Risks are still significant. Scaling up production may face delays, customer tests might not succeed, and there is potential for partners’ timelines to be pushed back. Ongoing cash outflows could require dilution before royalty streams are meaningful.
The valuation gap is the challenge. QuantumScape needs to convert pilot production into signed revenue, not just reduced losses.
