NEW YORK, July 21, 2026, 19:07 EDT — With U.S. cash markets shut, after-hours trading continued.
Dell Technologies Inc. NYSE:DELL gained 5.7% to $427.10 in after-hours trading on Tuesday. The increase came after Super Micro Computer Inc. NASDAQ:SMCI reported a preliminary margin surprise.
The response is significant as Dell’s increase in AI-related activity has been accompanied by a decline in overall profit margins. The company reported a quarterly gross margin of 17.8%, down from 21.1%.
Super Micro projected a fourth-quarter gross margin of 15% to 17%, up from its earlier forecast of 8.2% to 8.4%. Revenue remained close to the lower boundary of the company’s $11 billion to $12.5 billion outlook. Incoming orders surpassed $60 billion.
The margin signal prompted a positive reaction from investors. Super Micro surged 18.4% in after-hours trading, with Dell up 5.7%.
This resulted in an uncommon difference in market value. An initial estimate shows Dell’s implied increase approaching $15.1 billion, roughly 4.6 times the $3.2 billion gain recorded by Super Micro.

However, Dell saw its overall gross margin decrease by 3.3 percentage points from a year earlier. Alphabet Inc. NASDAQ:GOOGL is set to announce results following Wednesday’s closing bell. The company’s capital expenditure outlook for 2026 is currently forecast at $180 billion to $190 billion. Possible adjustments to this guidance could challenge expectations around AI-related infrastructure needs.
The Federal Reserve begins a two-day session on July 28. Dell will report its next earnings on September 3, so similar company updates are likely to influence trading in the short term.
Uncertainty persists. Super Micro’s numbers are still preliminary and yet to be audited. After-hours trading sees less liquidity, and Dell’s client demographics may not be the same.
Investors are watching to see if Dell can convert AI demand into sales with higher profit margins.
