QuantumScape (NASDAQ:QS) slides as PowerCo reduces maximum payment by 42%

NEW YORK, July 22, 2026, 18:09 EDT

  • Shares were down 3.8% to $5.65 in after-hours trading, following a 3.0% decline during the regular session.
  • Under the updated PowerCo plan, payment limits are set at $75.4 million, reduced from nearly $131 million.
  • Billings for the first half surpassed those for all of 2025, but fell quarter-on-quarter.

QuantumScape stock declined 3.8% to $5.65 in after-hours trading on Wednesday. The company reported a reduced loss. Executives further outlined a decreased payment cap from PowerCo.

Investor concerns focus on cash quality. PowerCo, Volkswagen AG’s battery division, switched from cost reimbursement to milestone-based payments. Total maximum program payments dropped to $75.4 million, counting amounts disbursed so far.

This limits the usefulness of billings by themselves. Customer billings represent invoices—distinct from GAAP revenue—and fluctuate based on project progress.

Billings for the first half totaled $21.8 million, compared with $19.5 million in the full year 2025. The company reported billings of $10.8 million for the second quarter, pointing to $11.0 million for the first quarter and a 1.8% decrease quarter-on-quarter.

The revised contract alters both the sum and the schedule.

Payment basisReimbursement of costsMilestones for cell delivery and validation
Program windowEstimated to last through Q2 2027Extends until Q2 2028

The maximum amount decreased by $55.6 million, a drop of 42.4%. The timing for payment shifted roughly a year forward. The distinct $130 million royalty prepayment is still linked to technical milestones.

Chief Financial Officer Kevin Hettrich stated that reduced project expenses are expected to balance out the decline in inflows. He projected “a net neutral financial impact in terms of cash.” Investing.com

QuantumScape’s quarterly results surpassed the consensus estimate for losses. The company reported a per-share loss of $0.16, compared with an anticipated loss of $0.18. Net loss decreased to $98.2 million from $114.7 million.

At the close of June, liquidity was $859 million. The company’s forecast for full-year adjusted EBITDA loss remained within the range of $250 million to $275 million. Expected capital expenditures were revised down to between $27 million and $37 million.

Based on midpoint guidance, the sum of adjusted EBITDA loss and capital expenditures amounts to $294.5 million. An initial estimate indicates liquidity covers 2.9 years at this yearly rate. This figure does not include client funds, interest, working capital needs or future funding. It does not represent a projection of cash flow.

The Eagle Line has been integrated and achieves core-tool uptime above 90%. Management intends to double cell output in the second half. PowerCo’s production goal is still set for 2029.

QuantumScape finished at $5.87, marking an 8.7% decline from July 15. The stock subsequently moved to just one cent away from its 52-week low. Trading volume in the regular session was 13% higher than the 65-day average. Meanwhile, a key automotive index advanced 3.1% on Wednesday.

U.S. regular markets ended trading at 18:09 EDT, while after-hours activity continued. The next key point will be the opening on Thursday.

Over the next week, investors are set to consider Hettrich’s assertion of cash neutrality alongside the lower cap. QuantumScape’s investor schedule shows no further company events following Wednesday’s call.

Risks are still significant. According to the SEC filing, milestone delays, cell quality, cost, and throughput are key concerns. PowerCo is also critical for the 2029 production timeline.
