Micron’s elevated valuation partly reflects a U.S. bet on the AI supply chain. The Trump administration has discouraged American firms from purchasing memory from China. This approach may shield Micron’s potential market, but does not eliminate the risk of market cycles.

Core memory fundamentals continue to show strength. According to industry outlooks referenced by Barron’s, DRAM is expected to see price increases of as much as 20% in the third and fourth quarters, while NAND could climb by up to 40%. Additionally, Micron benefits from extended customer contracts that enhance visibility into demand.

UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri stated that investors “underappreciate” the way AI has increased the strategic value of DRAM. Arcuri also pointed to accelerated HBM obsolescence, which acts as a deterrent to stockpiling inventory. UBS comments reported by Investing.com

The target spread corresponds to a significant capital bet. Initial projections, referencing Micron’s $1.06 trillion market capitalization, center the average target at about $1.71 trillion. The lower target is approximately $408 billion.

The focus next week shifts to macro, not earnings. Treasury will auction two-, five-, and seven-year notes from August 25 to August 27. Sustained elevated yields would continue to weigh on Micron’s premium multiple.

Risks: Higher DRAM and NAND prices may quickly validate the premium. However, lower AI demand, surplus memory supply or increased yields could bring the multiple closer to Asian competitors.
