Recovered Bitcoin Wallet Is Worth $4.76 Million as Custody Risk Dwarfs Price Swing

A British investor regained a long-inaccessible Bitcoin wallet now worth about $4.76 million. The recovery restored far more value than one day of market volatility put at risk.

A British investor regained a long-inaccessible Bitcoin wallet now worth about $4.76 million. The recovery restored far more value than one day of market volatility put at risk.

That gap is the investor lesson. Bitcoin’s price remains volatile, but custody failure can turn a tradable asset into an unusable one.

Bitcoin traded at $78,064.21 at 06:35:25 EDT on Tuesday. It was down 0.78% from its rolling 24-hour opening level, according to Coinbase Exchange.

Access had been frozen for 12 years. The owner, identified only as Chris, bought £1,500 of Bitcoin in 2011 through early UK exchange Intersango.

What 61 BTC is worth

Every $1,000 Bitcoin move changes the balance by $61,000.

BTC at $70,000$4.27 million
Current: $78,064.21$4.762 million
BTC at $90,000$5.49 million

Scenario arithmetic uses 61 BTC. Current price as of September 1, 2026, 06:35 EDT: Coinbase Exchange.

Intersango closed in 2014, leaving the account unavailable. Lawyers established ownership this year and returned the assets within months, LBC reported.

LBC described “dozens” of coins and a £3.3 million balance. A later report put the holding at 61 BTC. No public wallet address accompanied either account.

Ryan Sweetnam, CEL Solicitors’ financial-litigation director, assembled the ownership records. “We had to get all the court documents sorted for American courts,” he told LBC.

The recovery arithmetic

£1,500initial 2011 purchase
12 yearswithout account access
£3.3mreported recovered value
2,200×nominal value multiple

Reported figures and timeline: LBC. Multiple is £3.3 million divided by £1,500; it excludes taxes, fees and any earlier sales.

The reported value is 2,200 times the initial cash outlay. That nominal multiple excludes legal costs, taxes and any change in the coin count.

The owner said the recovered assets now sit on an FCA-registered platform. Registration does not provide broad investment protection; the FCA says UK crypto activity remains largely unregulated.

For investors, the episode separates market risk from access risk. Price exposure can be measured continuously. Failed records, counterparties or recovery plans can make the entire balance unavailable.

Risks: The 61 BTC figure comes from secondary reporting, not a disclosed wallet. Bitcoin prices can move sharply, and recovery does not remove fraud, tax or counterparty exposure.

Chris plans to sell part of the balance and retain some Bitcoin. The mix keeps upside exposure while converting recovered access into usable capital.
