Bitcoin ETF Inflows Shrink 76% as $80,000 Breakout Loses Momentum

NEW YORK, September 5, 2026 at 8:12 a.m. EDT — U.S. spot bitcoin funds drew $174.6 million on Friday. That was 76% below Thursday’s eight-month high, while bitcoin slipped back under $80,000.

The retreat changes the weekend question. Thursday’s $730.8 million rush proved large buyers had returned. Friday showed they had yet to broaden or accelerate the trade.

The burst still left $905.4 million of net inflows across two sessions. Yet the second day supplied less than one-fifth of that total.

One surge, then a smaller follow-through

The two green sessions matter. Their uneven size makes persistence, rather than direction alone, the next test.

The four-day path was jagged. Funds lost $236.5 million Tuesday, gained $101.1 million Wednesday, then attracted $905.4 million over Thursday and Friday.

Concentration was the sharper clue. BlackRock’s NYSE:BLK iShares Bitcoin Trust NASDAQ:IBIT captured $454 million on Thursday and another $117.4 million Friday.

The concentration in IBIT is the tell,” BTC Markets analyst Rachael Lucas said after Thursday’s print. She described IBIT as the vehicle institutions use for large allocations.

Bitcoin traded near $79,666 early Saturday, almost unchanged from Friday’s Coinbase close. It remained roughly 2% below Thursday’s $81,264 finish.

The listed vehicles weakened before Wall Street closed. IBIT fell 2.4% Friday, Coinbase NASDAQ:COIN lost 4.2%, and Strategy NASDAQ:MSTR declined 1.5%.

Those moves do not erase the cash inflow. They show that buyers absorbed supply while the underlying asset repriced lower.

IBIT and FBTC supplied all of Friday’s reported net inflow. Breadth across issuers vanished even though the total stayed positive.

Friday also changed the rate backdrop. The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, while unemployment held at 4.1%.

That report followed Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller’s Thursday speech. He said his decision “will be heavily influenced by what we learn about August inflation.”

The next scheduled test arrives September 11 with August consumer prices. U.S. shares remain closed for Labor Day on Monday, leaving bitcoin to trade through the long weekend.

The risk cuts both ways. A softer inflation reading could revive Thursday’s allocation surge. Hot data could deepen Friday’s retreat before ETF buyers return Tuesday.

For now, the flow is positive and unusually concentrated. A second large session never arrived. That makes breadth across issuers more useful than another brief move above $80,000.
