AI chip stocks recover from 10% weekly drop; late dip increases expectations

  • Advanced Micro Devices held onto just 20% of its peak intraday rally following the news of Azure deployment.
  • The PHLX Semiconductor Index declined roughly 10% over the past week, finishing Friday 20.2% under its record closing level set on June 22.
  • Alphabet is set to announce results on July 22. Intel and AMD will host their AI event on July 23.

Advanced Micro Devices surrendered the majority of Monday’s session gains. Microsoft announced Azure will incorporate AMD’s Helios AI racks. AMD shares last changed hands at $503.57, rising 1.47%, after climbing as high as $532.80.

The U.S. cash market closed at 16:00 EDT, while after-hours trading continued.

The announcement stated that Azure will be deployed at a larger scale and provided a timeframe for Helios shipments, set for the second half of 2026. However, the release did not specify order value, number of units, or expected revenue contribution.

Market movements indicate that investors are now prioritising confirmed financial results over client signings. That standard increased following last week’s selloff.

The PHLX Semiconductor Index declined approximately 10% last week, marking its steepest weekly loss in over a year. Despite this, the index began this week up almost 65% in 2026.

Final figures show the Nasdaq Composite ended 0.04% lower at 25,510.27. The S&P 500 fell 0.18% to 7,444.19. A modest rebound among chip stocks was outweighed by overall market weakness.

Peer gains also lost momentum. Shares of Nvidia , Broadcom , Micron Technology and Marvell Technology all pulled back from their session peaks.

An equal-weight assessment indicates that just 34% of peak gains were retained. AMD held onto 20%, while Nvidia preserved 11%.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella said customers sought “performance, scale and choice.” AMD chief Lisa Su described the deployments as an “important milestone.” Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

The bar for earnings is high. LSEG predicts semiconductor and equipment earnings will increase 133% from a year earlier, which is 5.1 times higher than the growth rate anticipated for the S&P 500.

These firms are projected to contribute 44% of the S&P 500’s overall profit expansion. Rick Meckler at Cherry Lane Investments described the daily volatility as “shocking.” He warned that a weaker-than-expected outlook might alter the profit outlook. Reuters

Investor risk reduction is reflected in fund flows. U.S. growth funds experienced net outflows of $7.18 billion as of July 15. Overall, U.S. equity funds saw a total net outflow of $4.8 billion.

Alphabet will deliver its next update on Wednesday after markets close, drawing attention to the company’s AI investment plans. Its outlook has potential to impact the broader chip supply chain.

Intel is set to report after the market closes on Thursday. Earlier in the day, AMD will host its Advancing AI event. Investors are watching for updates on product launch timing and clearer revenue guidance.

Risks include reductions in hyperscaler spending, disappointing forecasts or additional export restrictions, all of which could worsen declines. Leveraged chip products could amplify any market shifts.

Monday’s rebound did little to change the outlook. Upcoming moves will be driven by data rather than by individual players.
