New York, February 12, 2026, 12:57 — Regular session Albemarle shares fell 6.8% to $163.50 on Thursday after the company said it would idle the remaining operating “train,” or processing unit, at its Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant in Western Australia, effective immediately. Chief executive Kent Masters said “recent lithium price improvements” were “not enough” to offset the strain on “Western hard-rock lithium conversion operations.”

The Shanghai Metals Market index dropped to 154,434 yuan per metric ton, according to SMM. Prices for battery-grade material ranged between 145,000 and 166,000 yuan a ton, while industrial-grade traded slightly lower at 142,000 to 162,000 yuan, SMM noted. China’s top lithium carbonate futures contract wavered sharply in a 132,400-152,800 yuan band as upstream sellers stayed cautious and downstream buyers probed for cheaper deals.

U.S.-listed lithium miners slipped before the Wall Street open: Albemarle fell $3.70, or about 2%, to $180.70; SQM lost $1.92, or 2.3%, to $81.64; and Lithium Americas slid 58 cents, down 9.7%, to $5.43.

Meanwhile, the most-active lithium carbonate futures on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange surged nearly 9%, hitting its daily upper limit at 160,500 yuan, according to SMM data. Upstream sellers held back spot volumes beyond their long-term contracts, while downstream buyers mostly stuck to “as needed” purchases, SMM noted. Overall trade activity slipped a bit.
