Joby Aviation Stock Gets NYC Air Taxi Catalyst as Archer Rivalry Heats Up

Joby Aviation on Monday reported it pulled off New York City’s inaugural point-to-point flights using an electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi, flying its battery-powered craft from John F. Kennedy International Airport out to Downtown Skyport, then over to the West 30th Street and East 34th Street heliports. These eVTOLs lift straight up like helicopters. According to Joby, that same JFK route—typically a 60- to 120-minute slog by car—would take just seven minutes in the air.

Joby Aviation Inc. and Reuben Brothers announced Thursday that they’re aiming to convert the existing helipad on top of Park Elm Residences at Century Plaza in Los Angeles into a vertiport for Joby’s electric air taxis—a tangible step forward in the company’s Los Angeles rollout. The vertiport would serve as a hub for eVTOL aircraft, or electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles, handling takeoffs, landings, and charging.

Shares of Archer Aviation Inc rose roughly 0.7% to $8.87 by 11:56 a.m. EST Monday. The move came after Highful Law PLLC, a shareholder law firm, announced it was launching an investigation into possible securities claims against the electric air-taxi maker.
