NEW DELHI, August 24, 2026, 01:50 IST Balrampur shares traded 5% higher than analysts’ forecasts following India’s decision to reverse its sugar import policy.
- Balrampur Chini dropped 4.9% on Friday, though it still rose 16.7% over the week.
- Global sugar prices rose up to 4% after India announced a one-million-tonne import quota.
- Balrampur finished at ₹729.35, which is 5.1% higher than the average analyst target.
India’s decision to reverse sugar imports has triggered a two-way trade. Shares in Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (NSE:BALRAMCHIN) dropped 4.9% on Friday as investors anticipated softer domestic margins.
The move also drove a rise of up to 4% in global sugar futures. Teucrium Sugar Fund NYSEARCA:CANE finished last week up 4.2%. India is meeting global demand and simultaneously aiming to limit domestic prices.
Balrampur finished the week up 16.7% at ₹729.35. Gains from Thursday’s rally surpassed the impact of Friday’s policy surprise. Shares ended 5.1% above the analysts’ consensus target.
| Listed sugar exposure | Ticker | Aug. 14 close | Aug. 21 close | Weekly move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Limited | BSE:500097 | ₹422.60 | ₹497.25 | +17.7% |
| Balrampur Chini Mills | NSE:BALRAMCHIN | ₹624.85 | ₹729.35 | +16.7% |
| Teucrium Sugar Fund | NYSEARCA:CANE | $10.76 | $11.21 | +4.2% |
Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Limited (BSE:500097) followed a similar trend, adding 17.7% over the week even after a reversal on Friday. Earlier, traders had responded to increasing mill prices.
New Delhi subsequently launched a quota for one million tonnes of raw sugar to be imported at zero duty, compared to the usual 100% tariff. Applications are accepted until August 28, and imports can be made up to October 31.
Ashok Jain from the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association stated the move would “cap the domestic rally.” Approximately 300,000 tonnes stored with port refiners may become available to domestic buyers in the near term. Reuters

The government reduced its production forecast due to crop disease and waterlogging. Authorities also dismissed ethanol diversion as the primary factor. Retail sugar prices increased 15.6% over one month.
The squeeze drove mill prices higher. Balrampur’s recent quarter illustrates the investor reaction. Sugar sales averaged ₹41.55 per kilogram, significantly lower than current spot prices.
| Balrampur Q1 FY27 | Year earlier | Latest quarter | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹1,542.27 crore | ₹1,636.79 crore | +6.1% |
| EBITDA | ₹134.3 crore | ₹113.9 crore | -15.1% |
| EBITDA margin | 8.70% | 6.96% | -174 bps |
| Net profit | ₹51.57 crore | ₹44.15 crore | -14.4% |
Sugar prices climbed, but have not restored profitability. Revenue for the quarter increased by 6.1%, while EBITDA dropped 15.1%. Net profit decreased 14.4%.
The balance sheet reflects another significant bet. Balrampur has invested approximately ₹2,180 crore into its PLA bioplastics initiative. The company’s trailing free cash flow stands at negative ₹349 crore, and total debt is close to ₹3,170 crore.
Chairman Vivek Saraogi stated that the company stands “at the cusp of a decisive transformation.” The PLA facility, with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes, is scheduled for commissioning in the latter part of FY27. Execution is now equally important as sugar prices. Q1 presentation
| Analyst measure | Recommendation | Target | Vs. ₹729.35 |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P Global consensus, 6 analysts | Strong Buy | ₹692.17 average | -5.1% |
| Low target | Range low | ₹590.00 | -19.1% |
| Median target | Range middle | ₹712.50 | -2.3% |
| High target | Range high | ₹752.00 | +3.1% |
The recommendation label signals bullishness. However, the price targets suggest otherwise. The highest target, ₹752, indicates just a 3.1% rise from Friday’s close.
Risks: Slower imports may sustain higher domestic sugar prices and support improvements in mill margins. Enhanced cane recovery, robust ethanol prices, or efficient PLA commissioning could further boost earnings above existing projections.
The coming week will reveal if Thursday’s rally marked a top. Global sugar prices stay firm on Indian purchases. Balrampur must now deliver earnings to justify its current valuation.
