Microsoft launches $899 Xbox Series X25 in bid to gauge pricing power as console revenue drops 29%

NEW YORK, August 27, 2026, 12:49 (EDT)

  • Microsoft set the price for the limited Xbox Series X25 collection at $899.99.
  • The package is priced at $100 more than the standard 1TB Series X, a difference of 12.5%.
  • Microsoft reported a 29% decrease in Xbox hardware revenue for its fiscal 2026.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) began taking general preorders Thursday for its $899.99 Xbox Series X25 lineup. The high-end release gauges demand following a sharp drop in hardware sales.

The see-through green console offers 1TB of storage capacity. It comes with a matching controller and includes a Halo: Campaign Evolved download. Each console is individually numbered. Microsoft is set to launch it on November 13 Xbox announcement.

Price serves as a signal to investors. Microsoft’s regular 1TB Series X is priced at $799.99. The anniversary edition, therefore, commands a 12.5% higher price while offering no extra storage Microsoft Store.

The bundle reduces that premium. Individually, Halo’s standard edition is priced at $49.99, and the X25 controller retails for $79.99. However, a regular Series X already comes with a controller, which complicates a straightforward value comparison Halo pricing.

Microsoft faces pressure on hardware profitability as Xbox revenue declined by $1.7 billion, or 7%, during fiscal 2026. The company’s hardware sales slid 29% amid decreased console purchases Microsoft 2026 Form 10-K.

The decline persisted into June. Xbox revenue for the fourth quarter dropped 10%. More Personal Computing revenue was down 4%, reaching $12.9 billion, and the segment’s operating margin narrowed to 21% Microsoft earnings call.

The restricted production by itself will not reverse those trends. Microsoft has not provided details on unit supply. If 100,000 units are sold, total revenue would be near $90 million prior to factoring in returns, channel costs and revenue recognition. This represents approximately 0.7% of the most recent More Personal Computing quarter.

Scarcity remains important. Assigning numbers to a design can uphold average selling prices, even if the core platform stays unchanged. It may also indicate if dedicated buyers are willing to accept the latest increases in console prices.

At 12:38 p.m. EDT, Microsoft stock was trading at $503.92, gaining 1.52%. Trading volume stood at 11.9 million shares, under the 65-day average of 38.9 million. The session’s gains were led by a broader technology advance rather than solely the console, according to WSJ market data.

The broader outlook from analysts stays positive for the company. A total of 55 analysts have assigned a consensus Buy rating. Their mean target price stands at $569.45, representing an increase of roughly 14.7% from Wednesday’s closing level MarketScreener consensus.

Risks: Microsoft has yet to disclose production quantities or console profit margins. Higher prices may limit buyer interest. Rapid sellouts might indicate limited supply instead of a sustained rebound in hardware sales.

Investor bridge and risks

The collection directly enters Xbox hardware revenue at a 12.5% premium to the standard 1TB Series X. A sellout would support pricing power and average selling price, but even an aggressive 250,000-unit scenario produces about $225 million of gross sales—only 1.7% of one recent More Personal Computing quarter.

Watch: production volume, sell-through speed, channel inventory, discounting before November 13 and any hardware-margin disclosure. Scarcity can create a sellout without proving mass-market demand. The 1.5% MSFT gain occurred during a broad technology rally and should not be attributed to Xbox alone.
