Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) Increases Cash Holdings as Bitcoin Premium Faces Banking Sector Adoption Test

NEW YORK, July 21, 2026, 05:07 EDT — U.S. cash market closed, with premarket activity now in progress.

  • Strategy sold 2.73 million common shares, raising $263.5 million. It did not purchase any bitcoin.
  • The proceeds are equivalent to approximately 1.8 months of projected yearly dividends and interest. The cash reserve is sufficient for about 22 months.
  • Strategy places institutional adoption of digital assets at 32%, with Fidelity topping its list at 71%.

Strategy Inc. raised $263.5 million from the sale of 2.73 million common shares last week. No bitcoin was purchased.

The funds represent close to 1.8 months’ worth of yearly preferred dividend and debt interest payments. The entire reserve amounts to about 22 months, calculated on an annual run-rate of $1.76 billion.

That distinction is key for shareholders. Liquidity was supported by common equity, rather than an increase in bitcoin per share.

Average net proceeds came to $96.44 for each share sold, based on calculations. MSTR finished Monday’s session at $97.82, and was quoted at $101.26 in early premarket trading.

Bitcoin was trading around $66,152 at the dateline. At this value, Strategy’s 843,775 coins were valued at roughly $55.8 billion, about $7.9 billion less than their total acquisition cost of $63.69 billion.

Last week, MSTR rose 0.2% from one Friday to the next, while Bitcoin edged down 0.4%. On Monday, MSTR shares surged 3.1%.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor described corporate adoption as “necessary, inevitable, and welcome” on July 18. The most recent filing, however, indicated a more cautious approach to capital allocation. CryptoRank

Chief Executive Phong Le stated that adoption “is accelerating, but still early at 32%.” Strategy determined the ranking using public information available through July 10. Traders Magazine

Fidelity holds a 25-point advantage, indicating the disparity in progress. The five banks listed are separated by just three percentage points.

The index tracks trading, custody, product offerings, lending, and leadership activities. These services can expand access without replicating Strategy’s focused balance sheet.

The implications for MSTR holders are mixed. Increased access to banks could bolster demand for bitcoin, but it might also lessen dependence on MSTR as a market stand-in.

The proxy premium is currently slim. Enterprise mNAV was assessed at approximately 1.02, showing minimal premium compared to bitcoin net assets. With values close to parity, issuing new shares provides limited opportunity for accretive acquisitions.

The upcoming test will be if Strategy restarts buying or continues to accumulate cash. The company’s next major event is its second-quarter earnings, set for release after the U.S. market closes on July 30.

Risks: The strategy has yet to publish comprehensive scoring weights or criteria for evidence. Fluctuations in bitcoin’s price may overshadow adoption signals. Accelerated bank adoption might support bitcoin, but additional sales of common stock could dilute the value for MSTR shareholders.
