NEW YORK, July 23, 2026, 17:15 EDT – A change in August 2026 Social Security Income (SSI) payment timing draws attention to Walmart’s NASDAQ:WMT quarter-end sales, as market watchers assess possible impacts on consumer spending patterns.
- Recipients will receive their August SSI payment on July 31, a day ahead of schedule.
- Initial estimate: standard monthly SSI payments amount to roughly $5.4 billion.
- Walmart’s fiscal quarter concludes on that date. The previous year’s payment landed after Q2.
The August SSI payout may shift consumer spending into Walmart’s NASDAQ:WMT fiscal second quarter, as the payment is scheduled for July 31, coinciding with the end of the retailer’s quarter.
The previous year, the benefit was distributed on August 1, following Walmart’s fiscal quarter that ended the prior day. This year, the shift provides a slight timing boost rather than generating extra demand.
Dollar General NYSE:DG and Dollar Tree NASDAQ:DLTR experience fewer discrepancies. The August SSI payment was part of both years’ fiscal calendars for these companies.
The Social Security Administration reported 7.324 million individuals receiving SSI benefits in June. The typical monthly payment amounted to $738.10. Early data indicates total regular benefits approached $5.4 billion.
The amount represents about 0.7% when compared to June’s retail and food-service sales, which came to $768.6 billion in total. The proportion is a measure of scale alone.
This is not an additional advantage. Because August 1 is a Saturday, payment is advanced to Friday. There is no distinct SSI payment later in August.
Additional Social Security payment dates in August include August 3, 12, 19 and 26. Wednesday payments are scheduled based on birth dates. The change to July 31 concerns SSI recipients.
According to SSA calendars and corporate disclosures, the reporting deadline is listed below. Quarter-end dates for 2026 are based on published fiscal schedules.
| Retailer | Fiscal Q2 closes, 2025 | SSI date in August, 2025 | Estimated Q2 close, 2026 | SSI date in August, 2026 | Payment falls inside Q2? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart | July 31 | August 1 | July 31 | July 31 | No → Yes |
| Dollar General | August 1 | August 1 | July 31 | July 31 | Yes → Yes |
| Dollar Tree | August 2 | August 1 | August 1 | July 31 | Yes → Yes |
The comparison singles out the year-over-year difference. Walmart might record some purchases a quarter ahead. Rival companies do not receive the same cutoff advantage.
Research referenced by the NBER showed an increase in short-term spending following Social Security disbursements. This highlights the importance of late-July traffic and card usage data.
The impact coincides with a challenging environment for low-income households. “There’s no question the low-income consumer is under pressure,” Dollar Tree CFO Stuart Clendening said in May. Reuters
U.S. cash markets ended down on Thursday. Walmart dropped 0.9%, Dollar General slipped 4.2%, and Dollar Tree declined 3.6%. The Nasdaq shed 2.15%, pressured by losses in technology stocks and lower oil prices.
All three stocks fell between last Friday’s close and Thursday:
| Company | July 17 close | July 23 close | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart | $114.24 | $108.40 | -5.1% |
| Dollar General | $125.75 | $115.16 | -8.4% |
| Dollar Tree | $125.94 | $117.65 | -6.6% |
Differences are based on closing price values.
The Federal Reserve is set to meet on July 28-29. Advance GDP figures for the second quarter and June income numbers will be released on July 30. SSI payments are due the following day, July 31.
Formal July retail sales data is scheduled for release on August 14, postponing the most comprehensive public report on consumer expenditure.
Risks: The change does not boost household income. Expenditure might follow after the initial deposit. Any impact could be offset by oil-driven inflation.
A timing-adjusted comparison gives a clearer picture for Walmart. Transactions from late July should be normalized ahead of making comparisons with peers.
