Kroger (NYSE:KR) Surpasses Walmart by 95 Cents, Highlights Margin Strategy

Kroger edged out Walmart by 95 cents in a 15-item price comparison released Monday. Though the margin is narrow, it provides a practical view of CEO Greg Foran’s drive on pricing.

NEW YORK, July 22, 2026, 07:07 EDT — U.S. core equity markets remained shut before trading was set to begin at 09:30 EDT.

  • At Kroger, a 15-item basket of store-brand products was priced at $30.00, while the same basket at Walmart was $30.95, according to Supermarket News.
  • Kroger’s $1.12 edge on pantry staples balanced Walmart’s 17-cent advantage in fresh foods.
  • The research relied on single-instance online prices, rather than using data averaged across regions or over time.

Kroger edged out Walmart by 95 cents in a 15-item price comparison released Monday. Though the margin is narrow, it provides a practical view of CEO Greg Foran’s drive on pricing.

Walmart’s basket cost 3.2% more compared to Kroger. Aldi’s prices were 10.5% higher, and Albertsons Companies were 18.6% above Kroger.

The category breakdown is more important to investors than overall position. Kroger led in pantry staples, while Walmart took the lead in fresh produce.

Walmart’s subtotal for fresh items reached $13.75, while Kroger’s stood at $13.92. For pantry staples, Kroger totaled $16.08, surpassing Walmart’s price by $1.12.

The comparison across four chains highlights the location of the pricing gap.

ChainBasket totalGap versus KrogerFresh subtotalPantry subtotalLowest-price items
Kroger$30.00$13.92$16.0810
Walmart$30.95+$0.95$13.75$17.203
Aldi$33.15+$3.15$14.48$18.672
Albertsons$35.58+$5.58$14.92$20.660

The price of sugar at Kroger was 64 cents lower compared to Walmart. However, Walmart matched this difference with the price of chicken breast.

Kroger reduced costs by 30 cents on corn flakes and by 24 cents on canned tomatoes. Rice was 26 cents less expensive at Walmart.

Estimate: Making the same basket purchase weekly could result in savings of approximately $49 per year compared to Walmart. The difference compared with Albertsons could be nearly $290. These calculations are based on unchanging prices and buying the same basket every week.

Foran stated in May, “The reality is, the basket has to come down.” Kroger intends to lower prices on thousands of items, supported in part by cost reductions. Reuters

The approach is already affecting margins. Gross margin for the first quarter dropped to 22.7%, compared to 23.0% previously.

Comparable sales minus fuel increased by 1.0%, compared to a 3.2% rise in the prior year. Kroger attributed the pressure on its margin in part to forthcoming price investments.

CFRA analyst Arun Sundaram stated that the “value war seems to be escalating.” Foran has added that Kroger attracts a high number of promotional visits but not enough larger basket purchases. Reuters

Kroger finished Tuesday at $57.78 and Walmart at $110.39. Since the market closed on July 15, Kroger has risen 2.2%, while Walmart has declined 1.9%.

Looking to the coming week, the focus shifts to breadth. Kroger is rolling out discounts on items including meat, pantry staples, frozen foods, produce, dairy and drinks. Wider regional surveys will help determine if this trend remains consistent.

Risks: The survey recorded typical online prices at a single point in time. It did not account for different regions or periods, and excluded some prominent retailers.

The snapshot reflects a short-term value benefit rather than a sustained advantage. Kroger needs to turn this into larger basket sizes while avoiding further pressure on margins.
