August 2026 Social Security Payout Timing Moves Estimated $5.4 Billion to July

NEW YORK, July 26, 2026, 10:08 EDT — U.S. markets are shut.

  • August Supplemental Security Income payments are set for Friday, July 31, as August 1 lands on a Saturday.
  • The standard payment stream is projected at $5.41 billion, representing around 0.7% of retail sales in June.
  • Social Security payments will also continue as planned on August 3, 12, 19 and 26.

Roughly $5.4 billion in August Supplemental Security Income is set for disbursement on July 31, potentially boosting transactions at the end of July.

The change brings no additional federal assistance. Because August 1 lands on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration issues payment one business day ahead.

This is the August payment. The following SSI deposit is set for September 1, creating a gap of 32 days between payments.

Data for June indicate there were 7.324 million SSI recipients, each receiving an average of $738.10. The total, calculated by multiplying these numbers, reaches $5.406 billion. This figure remains a preliminary estimate.

The SSA disbursed $5.780 billion in SSI payments for June, factoring in retroactive disbursements. These awards account for the increased official sum.

The schedule released by the SSA, along with last week’s payment data, verifies that order.

The initial figure represents 0.70% of June’s retail and food-service sales. The Census placed those sales at $768.6 billion.

The ratio exaggerates the potential impact for July. Only transactions completed on July 31 are counted as July sales. The bulk of spending from benefits is expected in August.

The Census accounts for seasonal, holiday and trading-day variations in retail sales figures, but does not adjust for changes in prices.

The last disbursement of July Social Security payments was made on July 22, reaching recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the end of the month. Previous payments were issued on July 8 and July 15.

The change on July 31 affects SSI. Retirement, survivor and disability benefits will follow the standard payment schedule in August.

Rob Haworth, who monitors consumer demand at U.S. Bancorp , maintains a positive outlook. “Consumer spending continues to benefit from steady income growth and a supportive labor market,” he said. U.S. Bank

On July 30, investors will see June figures for personal income and spending, released alongside the advance estimate for second-quarter gross domestic product.

The SSI transfer is scheduled for Friday. July’s retail sales are set for release on August 14, and data for August will be published on September 16.

Risks: Banks can process deposits at varying times. Recipients might use the funds to settle bills, keep cash, or cut back on alternative expenses. Estimating is further complicated by retroactive awards.

The calendar could account for the uptick in late July and the slowdown seen in early August. A clearer indication of broader demand awaits confirmation from income and retail figures.
