QuantumScape Corporation NASDAQ:QS touched a 52-week low on Tuesday. Shares continued to fall as investors sold off following last week’s earnings, even as the company maintains substantial liquidity.
The stock closed down 0.2% at $5.17, after reaching a session low of $4.77. Over the five sessions surrounding the earnings announcement, shares declined by 14.5%.
During those sessions, average turnover stood at 41.7 million shares, exceeding the 65-day average by 51%. Trading activity was not light.
QuantumScape reported $859 million in cash and marketable securities as of June 30, easing immediate financial concerns. The company recorded $130.9 million in combined operating cash usage and capital expenditure in the first half.
Annualizing the outflow provides a provisional runway estimate of 3.3 years. This calculation does not account for upcoming changes in spending, payments to partners, interest or financing. QuantumScape limits its guarantee to a minimum of 12 months.
The table presents Tuesday trading numbers alongside official company data. The percentages shown are derived from these figures.
| Measure | Latest | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Share close | $5.17 | 14.5% under July 21 |
| Five-session average volume | 41.7 million | 51% higher than 65-day norm |
| Liquidity | $859 million | 11.5% under Dec. 31 |
| Preliminary straight-line runway | 3.3 years | First half operating cash use plus capex, annualized |
| PowerCo program maximum | $75.4 million | 42.3% under previous ceiling |
The data indicate execution risk, not an urgent lack of cash. The revised PowerCo deal sheds light on this division.
The revised program shifted from cost reimbursement to payments based on reaching milestones. PowerCo, the battery division of Volkswagen AG ETR:VOW3, will receive funds contingent on battery cell delivery and validation.
The updated cap for the program stands at $75.4 million, factoring in payments made so far. This figure is 42.3% less than the earlier limit of $130.7 million.
The potential $130 million upfront royalty payment is treated independently. It is contingent on a subsequent intellectual-property licence and milestone achievement.
QuantumScape reduced its net loss in the second quarter, though the company has not yet generated revenue. Net loss decreased to $98.2 million from $114.7 million. Operating expenses dropped to $106.1 million from $123.6 million.
During the quarter, customer billings totaled $10.8 million. Management noted this figure does not qualify as revenue according to U.S. accounting standards.
The operating test has reached the Eagle Line, according to the company. Core tools are achieving over 90% uptime. QuantumScape targets a twofold increase in cell production in the second half.
Atsushi Ogawa, an executive with Honda Motor Co. NYSE:HMC, said the technology demonstrated “compelling and unique advantages” in the assessment phase. The deal with Honda is still a development project and has not become a production contract. SEC
QuantumScape’s investor calendar does not show any scheduled events after July 22. Honda is set to release its fiscal first-quarter earnings on August 5. No updates from QuantumScape are expected.
Risks: Cell output, manufacturing yield, and customer validation could fall short of targets. PowerCo payments and a separate licence are contingent on hitting milestones. Any delays might renew concerns about future funding and potential dilution.
Having cash extends the timeframe. For a sustained rebound in the stock, proven cell production and achieved milestone payments are now essential.
