The Dow reached a record high, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined. The divergence indicates index mechanics at play instead of widespread risk appetite.

Initial closing calculations indicate the breadth of the advance narrowed. About 207 points, or 78.6% of the Dow’s rise, was contributed by just three components.

The Dow is weighted by price. Any $1 shift in a component typically moves the index by about 5.94 points. The impact is not based on company size.

Alphabet’s drop nearly offset Amgen’s gains on its own. Combined, Amgen and Goldman accounted for roughly 61% of the overall increase. The record was notably reliant on high-value shares.

Amgen gained roughly 3.7% in late trading as second-quarter sales rose 9%. Walt Disney climbed approximately 3.6% following a quarterly profit beat.

“It’s just a straight rocket shot that we’ve gone up,” said Kenny Polcari, chief market strategist at Slatestone Wealth. However, market breadth was still lacking. In Reuters’ afternoon snapshot, decliners surpassed advancers on both key exchanges. Reuters

Investors received conflicting economic signals. Private payrolls rose by 44,000 in July. The services index came in at 54.1, missing the forecast of 54.5 but remaining above the level marking expansion. The probability of a rate increase in September declined to 54.9% from 58.3% a week ago.

Views on Amgen among analysts stayed mixed following its earnings increase. Fifty percent of those monitored kept neutral or negative outlooks. The consensus price target was still under the share price in late trading.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman increased his price target on Amgen to $450. TD Cowen raised its target to $452, up from $420. RBC Capital set its new target at $400, up from $370. All three maintained bullish ratings.

Overall profitability continues to provide a solid foundation. Early data indicate adjusted earnings for the S&P 500 have risen 31.1% compared to a year ago, with technology sector profits showing 72% growth. “Corporate profits have been spectacular,” said Eric Kuby of North Star Investment Management. Reuters

The Dow has risen 2,754.86 points since the market closed on July 29, marking a 5.34% gain over five sessions. The index accelerated over this period, but market breadth on Wednesday lagged behind that seen on Monday.

The upcoming data series will challenge the rally’s interest rate expectations.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has published its official release schedule.

Risks: A robust payroll or inflation report may drive Treasury yields higher and renew expectations for rate increases. The 10-year yield was last around 4.63%. A loss of optimism over the Middle East could push up oil prices and inflation. Heavy Dow leadership increases the impact of disappointment from individual stocks.

Thursday’s test concerns market breadth. The record appears more robust if a wider group of Dow stocks participates in the gains. If not, only a handful of higher-priced constituents will continue to carry most of the index’s progress.
