Europe’s $7.5 Billion Space Alliance: Airbus, Thales & Leonardo Join Forces to Challenge Musk’s Starlink

Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo will merge their satellite and space services businesses, forming a joint venture with €6.5 billion in annual revenue and 25,000 employees. Airbus will hold 35%, Thales and Leonardo 32.5% each. The new company, expected to launch by 2027 pending approvals, aims to challenge SpaceX’s Starlink and consolidate Europe’s space industry. Leonardo shares rose sharply after the announcement.

The SR-71 Blackbird set the official world speed record for crewed air-breathing aircraft at 2,193 mph (Mach 3.3) in 1976. The MiG-25 Foxbat reached Mach 3.2 in 1973 but was limited to Mach 2.8 in service. The MiG-31 Foxhound is currently the fastest operational combat aircraft, topping out at Mach 2.83. Modern fighters like the F-22, J-20, Su-57, and Eurofighter Typhoon reach around Mach 2.

    March 19, 2026, 9:22 PM EDT. Australian shares are expected to decline on Friday amid volatile energy markets triggered by Middle East strikes that briefly pushed Brent crude to $119 a barrel. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each dropped 0.3%, while the Dow fell 0.4% overnight. Investors are also focused on Australia's upcoming consumer price index report. Premier Investments (ASX:PMV) posted fiscal first-half earnings of AU$0.6351 per share on AU$460.3 million revenue, down from AU$0.7307 earnings on AU$465.2 million a year earlier. Flight Centre Travel Group (ASX:FLT) acquired UK agency Fresh Approach, expanding its FCM meetings-and-events operations. The ASX benchmark closed down 1.7% at 8,497.80 on Thursday.
