The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 311.99 points, or 0.67%, to 48,383.22; the S&P 500 added 12.52 points, or 0.18%, to 6,858.02; and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 5.30 points, or 0.02%, to 23,236.69. Recent selling also snuffed out hopes of a “Santa Claus rally” — a tendency for stocks to firm in the last five trading days of December and the first two of January — and Bank of America strategist Savita Subramanian said, “Stocks trade expensive on 18 of 20 measures.” Reuters
