Cerebras Shares Drop 5.3% Friday, Investors Evaluate 58x Sales and $51.8 Billion Valuation

SUNNYVALE, California, August 14, 2026, 13:12 PDT — U.S. cash markets finished trading.

  • Cerebras declined 5.3% on Friday, following a 12% slide after its earnings report on Thursday.
  • Core revenue rose twofold, while GAAP gross margin declined to 14.2%.
  • The market capitalization of $51.8 billion represents 58.5 times the projected 2026 core revenue.

Cerebras Systems Inc. dropped 5.3% to $218.87 on Friday, deepening a 12% post-earnings slide from Thursday, even as the company reported stronger underlying figures and lifted its outlook.

Stock chart for NASDAQ:CBRS

The market’s concern centers on valuation rather than demand. At the end of the week, Cerebras had a market capitalization of $51.8 billion. This amounts to 58.5 times the middle point of management’s projected core revenue range of $880 million to $890 million for 2026.

The other issue is accounting quality. Core revenue was $209.9 million, a 103% increase. GAAP revenue stood at $180.1 million, with GAAP gross margin dropping to 14.2% from 31.1%.

Operating loss$477.2 million$33.6 million$57.2 million GAAP; $43.9 million core
Operating margin-265%-16%-55% GAAP; -42% core

The revenue gap of $29.8 million requires attention. Core revenue removes $14.5 million in pass-through sales and includes $44.3 million from customer-warrant amortization. These adjustments are based on commercial deal terms, rather than actual cash collected during the quarter.

Stock-based compensation widened the profit discrepancy. Cerebras did not include $377.0 million in share-based expenses and $22.8 million in associated payroll tax. Core operating loss narrowed by 23%, but the GAAP loss jumped over eight times.

Chief Executive Andrew Feldman stated, “Core revenue more than doubled to $210 million, and our cloud business nearly quadrupled year-over-year.” GAAP cloud revenue increased 281% to $126.0 million. Hardware revenue declined 23% to $54.1 million.

The growth outlook is backed by the backlog. Remaining performance obligations totaled $25.4 billion. Management aims to more than triple revenue by 2027 and has locked in more than 600 megawatts of data-center capacity through that period.

Strong liquidity eases upcoming financing pressures. Cash, restricted cash, and short-term investments amounted to $8.6 billion. Capital expenditures for six months stood at $548.9 million, with $47.5 million used in operating cash.

Analysts maintained a consistently positive outlook. According to Google Finance, all ten ratings were Buy, with an average price target of $298.90. This suggests a potential upside of 36.6%, though those targets continue to rely on swift conversion of contracted demand into profitable revenue.

A product catalyst is expected in the coming week. Cerebras is set to host its SUPERNOVA event on Tuesday, August 18, at 15:30 PDT. The company’s management has said there will be product announcements along with demonstrations involving production AI applications.

Risks: The valuation hinges on extraordinary growth projections. Major clients such as OpenAI contribute to concentration risk. Warrant incentives, equity-based pay, and leased capacity may obscure profit margins and reduce shareholder value through dilution.

Next week’s test is tangible. Investors require proof that recent products are speeding up backlog conversion without widening the GAAP-to-core gap. With the company trading at 58.5 times projected sales, assurances may fall short.

Further analysis

Why did Cerebras stock fall despite stronger core results?
The stock fell 5.3% on Friday after dropping 12% on Thursday. Investors focused on a $51.8 billion valuation, a GAAP revenue miss and the wide gap between reported and core profitability.
What is the difference between Cerebras's GAAP and core revenue?
Core revenue was $29.8 million higher than GAAP revenue. The calculation removes $14.5 million of pass-through data-center sales and adds $44.3 million of customer-warrant amortization.
Is Cerebras stock expensive at $218.87?
The valuation is demanding. Cerebras's $51.8 billion market value equals about 58.5 times the midpoint of its $880 million-to-$890 million 2026 core-revenue outlook. This is a preliminary market-cap-to-sales calculation, not an enterprise-value multiple.
How important is Cerebras's $25.4 billion backlog?
Remaining performance obligations equal about 28.7 times the midpoint of 2026 core-revenue guidance. That provides unusual long-term visibility and supports management's plan to more than triple revenue in 2027.
What should Cerebras investors watch next week?
Cerebras will hold its SUPERNOVA event on August 18. Investors should watch for product announcements that can accelerate backlog conversion and improve infrastructure efficiency.
