- The Nasdaq rose approximately 1.3%, with semiconductor stocks climbing close to 5.5%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the session up 369.74 points, reaching 52,209.00. This marked an increase of 0.71%. Regular trading had concluded, but after-hours trading was still ongoing.
The headline rally exaggerated how widespread it was. At 3:51 p.m., there were 14 stocks rising and 16 falling. The Dow was up by 367.85 points at that time.
Four expensive stocks provided most of the gains. Goldman Sachs Group NYSE:GS and Caterpillar NYSE:CAT made the biggest point contributions. UnitedHealth Group NYSE:UNH and 3M NYSE:MMM rounded out the four.
| Component | Share move | Price move | Estimated Dow points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goldman Sachs NYSE:GS | up 2.67% | gained $28.21 | added 168 |
| Caterpillar NYSE:CAT | up 2.66% | rose $23.01 | added 137 |
| UnitedHealth NYSE:UNH | up 3.42% | increased $14.40 | added 86 |
| 3M NYSE:MMM | up 7.90% | advanced $12.58 | added 75 |
| Total for four stocks | — | gained $78.19 | added 464 |
| Dow at 3:51 p.m. | up 0.71% | — | added 368 |
Initial estimate based on share movements at 3:51 p.m. and a move of 5.94 Dow points for each $1.
The combined contribution from the four amounted to around 464 points for the Dow, representing 126% of the index’s advance shortly before the close. The remaining 26 components collectively subtracted about 97 points. Both numbers are subject to revision.
The difference highlights the Dow’s price-weighted structure. A $1 swing in a component was equivalent to roughly 5.94 points in the index. Because of this, Goldman’s 2.67% rise contributed more than double the points compared to 3M’s 7.90% surge.
3M provided the most straightforward earnings driver. The company lifted its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to a range of $8.80-$8.95, up from its previous projection of $8.50-$8.70. For the second quarter, adjusted EPS came in at $2.40, surpassing the consensus estimate of $2.25.
Revenue totaled $6.50 billion, surpassing the anticipated $6.41 billion. Chief Executive William Brown pointed to “robust operating margins of about 25%.” Adjusted organic sales increased by 5.4%. Reuters
Technology stocks drove broader market gains. The S&P 500 advanced nearly 0.9%. The Nasdaq rose about 1.3%, and the semiconductor index surged 5.5%.
Shares of Micron Technology NASDAQ:MU climbed 12.6%, while Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA rose approximately 2%. The gains underscored a rebound driven by chip stocks.
According to Lindsey Bell, chief investment strategist at 248 Ventures, investors purchased semiconductor shares ahead of earnings. However, she noted, “the stocks are also priced for perfection.” Reuters
The surge persisted even as macroeconomic pressures increased. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.634%, marking its peak since May 20. Brent advanced to $91.08, and U.S. crude hit $85.16.
The Dow advanced on Tuesday following a 0.9% drop in the previous week. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% during that period. Key technology firms will report earnings throughout the remainder of the week.
The analysis indicates a focused wager by investors. Elevated stock prices had a greater impact than widespread involvement. This can intensify market swings in both directions.
Risks: Oil trading over $90 may boost inflation outlook and push up bond yields. A narrow group of leaders could also cause a rapid reversal in the Dow.
