Ford (NYSE:F) falls as Spain deal highlights 370,000 idle factory slots

DETROIT, July 23, 2026, 08:07 EDT – Ford shares declined after an agreement in Spain drew attention to the automaker’s 370,000 unused production slots, intensifying concerns over plant underutilization.

Ford Motor Company shares slipped 0.6% to $14.34 during light premarket trading on Thursday. Early estimates indicate that Valencia’s idle yearly capacity is approximately 370,000 vehicles.

The facility in Spain has an annual production capability of roughly 500,000 vehicles. According to GlobalData, utilization stood at 26% in 2025, suggesting production was close to 130,000 units. These figures do not represent official guidance from the company.

The investment case relies on the unused capacity. A 10-point rise in utilization could accommodate about 50,000 additional vehicles. Ford stated that pooling volume is expected to drive down per-vehicle costs.

Ford and Geely Automobile Holdings are set to launch a manufacturing partnership with a 66%-34% ownership split. Pending regulatory approvals, operations are expected to begin in the first half of 2027. The companies plan to introduce new models from 2028.

Valencia’s upcoming range will grow from its existing single nameplate to a total of five.

Bill Russo, CEO of Automobility, said the agreement “reduces fixed cost exposure, keeps the plant alive and effectively monetizes excess capacity.” Reuters

U.S. regular trading was yet to begin. Premarket volume totaled just 13,974 shares. Ford finished Wednesday’s session at $14.42, rising 1.1%.

Ford rose 1.6% in the week spanning July 13-17. Through Wednesday, the stock was up 1.3%.

General Motors increased its projected adjusted EBIT for 2026 to between $14 billion and $16 billion, following a robust second quarter. Ford continues to forecast a range of $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion. Expectations for Tuesday have now been heightened.

Ford will announce its second-quarter earnings at 4:05 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, July 28. The project in Spain represents a more extended timeline, with initial new vehicles anticipated in 2028.

Risks: Delays in regulatory approval are possible, expenses for the launch might increase, and demand in Europe could stay low. The announcement did not include an investment amount or a specific savings goal.

In the short term, attention turns to Tuesday’s results as the key driver. Over the longer run, the utilization rate at Valencia stands as a clear measure of the venture’s performance.
