Nucor’s $5.7 Billion Tariff Selloff to Be Tested by Monday’s Market Reaction

NEW YORK, August 23, 2026, 6:15 PM EDT

  • Nucor dropped 9.4% over the past week, wiping out around $5.74 billion in market capitalization.
  • Failed negotiations between the U.S. and Canada leave 50% U.S. tariffs on steel in place, dashing hopes for the relief investors were expecting.
  • Canada intends to impose reciprocal tariffs starting September 8, targeting U.S. steel among other measures.
  • The consensus price target for Nucor on Wall Street suggests an upside of roughly 16% from the closing price on Friday.

Nucor Corporation saw its value drop by around $5.74 billion last week. Investors had anticipated reduced steel tariffs as part of a U.S.-Canada deal, but negotiations later broke down.

This sets up a straightforward test at Monday’s open. The 50% U.S. safeguard on domestic steel is still in place. However, Canada is preparing to retaliate against American steel, which reduces the overall advantage.

The United States has introduced 50% tariffs on almost $20 billion in goods imported from Canada. The new rates were implemented when talks between negotiators ended without a deal. The U.S. trade office first revealed the tariffs in July.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has recalled his negotiating team. “We cannot accept what they have offered,” he said on Saturday. Canada intends to match the response dollar for dollar on September 8. Prime Minister of Canada

Early calculations are based on 226.88 million shares in circulation. As of Friday, the company’s market capitalization stood near $55.27 billion. Shares continue to trade 13.0% under their August 5 peak.

Nucor starts this policy shift with solid operational momentum. Second-quarter revenue totaled $10.40 billion. Adjusted earnings stood at $4.84 per diluted share.

CEO Leon Topalian attributed record mill shipments to “supportive federal trade policies.” Steel-mill pretax profit totaled $1.56 billion, accounting for the bulk of overall earnings.

The Canadian response is significant as well. According to Carney, Canada stands as the biggest foreign purchaser of U.S. steel products. As a result, any retaliation has the potential to impact exporters, while protectionist measures in the United States help sustain domestic prices.

Analysts keep a positive outlook following the decline. The consensus price target of $282.81 suggests a potential gain of 16.1%. However, the majority of these targets were set before Friday’s collapse in trade talks.

Investors are advised to monitor the opening gap and trading volume on Monday. Consistent gains above the $243.63 close posted on Friday would indicate policy repricing. The next key fundamental event is the release of Canada’s detailed tariff list.

Risks: Restarting negotiations may soon revive hopes for tariff relief. Retaliatory measures could dampen Canadian demand, and elevated steel prices in the U.S. might limit manufacturing output.

Why the price moved

First: investors expected a U.S.–Canada deal to reduce 50% steel tariffs. That protection is valuable to domestic mills, so Nucor and Steel Dynamics sold off.

Now: talks have collapsed. The U.S. barrier remains, creating rebound potential Monday. Canada’s matching tariffs, including steel, cap the upside.

Investor read-through

A strong Monday gap with heavy volume would show that the market is restoring Nucor’s tariff premium. The move can fade if Canada’s detailed steel list hits U.S. exports broadly. A revived negotiation would also put tariff-relief risk back into the stock.

MARKET CALENDAR

Key Events Today

The catalysts most likely to move markets.

#1

U.S. index futures reopen at 18:00 ET

This is the clearest scheduled U.S.-market price-discovery point today and can transmit weekend news into equity-index futures before Monday's cash session.

#2

New Zealand retail sales at 18:45 ET

The Q2 retail package can move NZD and regional risk sentiment. Spillover to U.S. assets is usually secondary unless the result is unusually large.

#3

No scheduled domestic U.S. data or corporate reports

The absence of U.S. releases, earnings, IPO pricings and split events leaves fewer scheduled catalysts, increasing the relative importance of weekend headlines and positioning at the futures reopen.
