NIO (NYSE:NIO) shares rise as Firefly’s 11% price premium challenges profitability

New York, July 20, 2026, 12:26 EDT

  • NIO ADRs increased roughly 0.7% to $4.92 in early U.S. trading.
  • The starting price for Firefly’s Habitat is 133,300 yuan, which is 11.3% higher than the entry-level version.
  • Onvo and Firefly accounted for 90% of NIO’s quarter-on-quarter delivery growth in Q2.

NIO stock rose slightly on Monday following Firefly’s debut of Habitat, its compact electric vehicle with a focus on design. The model is priced at 133,300 yuan ($19,680), positioning it 13,500 yuan above the base version.

The markup acts as an investor gauge. Habitat features the same motor, battery, and a rated range of 420 km as the entry-level model.

This is significant as NIO’s sales mix shifted notably toward lower-priced models last quarter. Onvo and Firefly accounted for 43.4% of Q2 deliveries, up from 29.9% in Q1.

Out of NIO’s 24,193 additional deliveries for the quarter, 21,791 accounted for 90% of the quarter-on-quarter increase, according to company data.

Habitat’s distinctions are mainly in paint, trim, and interior materials. Firefly did not announce any sales goal or variation in production costs.

Daniel Jin, chief executive of Firefly, outlined the plan last November. “If we lower its positioning, we’re done for,” he told Reuters. Reuters

NIO received a minor validation in June. All 333 units of the Firefly special edition were sold in less than eight hours, achieving a 13.4% premium.

Firefly’s head of marketing, Pu Yang, stated that the speed “exceeded the management team’s initial expectations.” CnEVPost

The previous run was limited in scale. Habitat’s expansion of stores across the country is expected to provide a more comprehensive indication of demand.

NIO recorded a vehicle margin of 18.8% in the first quarter, compared with 10.2% in the same period last year. Second-quarter figures will indicate if the more affordable product range eroded those gains.

As of 12:10 p.m. EDT, delayed data showed NIO trading at $4.92. XPeng Inc. slipped 0.6%, whereas Li Auto Inc. climbed 1.7%.

Risks persist. Second-quarter deliveries fell short of NIO’s lower guidance threshold of 110,000 units. National demand for a 333-unit special edition may not expand.

Habitat orders have become more significant than the launch event. Robust uptake would indicate that Firefly is capable of driving price as well as volume. Softer demand would increase NIO’s vulnerability to mix dilution.
