VTI’s Nearly 2% Gain Supported by Chip and AI Stocks Beyond AMD

NEW YORK, August 4, 2026, 15:03 EDT

  • VTI advanced 2.0%, with AMD climbing 9.0% ahead of its quarterly report.
  • Initial attribution indicates AMD was responsible for just 6% of VTI’s previous gain.
  • VTI broke through a significant technical level, though technology continued to lead gains.

Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF gained 2.0%, trading at $381.15 during the afternoon. Advanced Micro Devices advanced 9.0% to $528.32. U.S. markets stayed open with roughly an hour remaining in the standard session.

However, AMD did not make up the bulk of the fund’s performance. Early attribution calculations with Quiver Quantitative’s listed weights point to a 0.094 percentage point impact, accounting for roughly 6% of VTI’s prior 1.5% increase.

Broadcom delivered the highest estimated contribution among the four stocks, with NVIDIA, Palantir, and Micron following.

VTI’s returns largely mirrored the overall market. QQQ, which is weighted toward technology, stood apart as the distinct exception.

Recorded at approximately 14:47 ET, VTI surpassed SPY and IWM by just under 0.1 percentage point. QQQ led VTI by roughly 1.43 points.

The comparison indicates widespread involvement, but highlights dominant performance from the technology sector. A total-market designation does not imply every holding has the same level of impact.

According to Quiver’s snapshot, the six firms accounted for roughly 49% of VTI’s 1.5% gain. Broadcom made a contribution nearly double that of AMD. The figure is based on multiplying each disclosed weight by the respective stock return.

VTI continues to hold a broad mix of company sizes. However, technology accounted for 42.3% of its assets based on Vanguard’s portfolio as of May 31. Major holdings included NVIDIA, Apple, Microsoft and Broadcom.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed roughly 5.8% on Tuesday. The S&P technology sector advanced 3.5%, but seven out of eleven sectors posted declines. On both main exchanges, the number of advancing stocks surpassed decliners by more than two to one.

“The AI earnings performance has been fantastic,” said Eric Parnell, chief market strategist at Great Valley Advisor Group. According to him, investors should separate lasting winners from companies that are less robust. Reuters

Monday’s published technical framework was also surpassed by price action. Stock Traders Daily had noted $377.20 as the breakout level for VTI.

VTI was trading at $381.15, reaching approximately 52% of the range from trigger to target. Stock Traders Daily classified its near-term and mid-term indicators as neutral. Its assessment for the long term remained strong.

On July 31, a TipRanks screen reflected the same split in outlook. Nine bullish and three bearish signals came from moving averages. Oscillators signaled a Strong Sell, but the general technical consensus stayed at Buy.

On July 29, Vanguard updated the fund’s name to include “Morningstar.” This update came after Morningstar rebranded the CRSP indexes. Vanguard stated there were no modifications to the fund’s objective or management approach. Vanguard Corporate

AMD shares advanced ahead of its earnings release. The chipmaker will publish results following Tuesday’s market close and hold a conference call at 5 p.m. ET.

Risks: AMD’s performance could partially unwind recent semiconductor gains. VTI’s wide scope conceals significant technology sector weighting. Technical indicators may rapidly become outdated during earnings periods.

Further analysis

What are the expected returns from the present position?
VTI was last quoted at $381.14 on August 4. Vanguard now estimates broad U.S. stock returns at 4.2%–6.2% per year over the next decade. That projection declined from 4.9%–6.9%, as second-quarter valuations surged. The figures are nominal and hypothetical, not a one-year target. Vanguard
Has VTI's valuation already factored in expectations of robust growth?
As of June 30, VTI’s holdings were valued at 27.0 times earnings and yielded 1.1%. Vanguard assessed that overall U.S. equity valuations are near the top end of their historical range, leaving limited room if profit growth slows or if valuations decline.
Is the current valuation supported by earnings growth?
S&P 500 earnings are projected by analysts to rise 29.1% in 2026. This serves as an indicator for large-cap stocks, rather than a full VTI outlook. The Q2 growth rate of 47.4% drops to 28.8% when Alphabet and Amazon are excluded. Substantial investment returns at these two firms were largely responsible for the disparity. FactSet Insight
Is concentration risk entirely removed by VTI's wide diversification?
Not entirely: VTI's portfolio included 3,531 stocks, with its ten biggest holdings comprising 33.4% of assets. Nvidia and Apple together made up 12.3% of total assets. While the fund is broadly diversified, returns remain dependent on the performance cycles of mega-cap stocks.
Which macroeconomic risk could undermine the bullish scenario?
On July 29, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady at 3.50%–3.75%, although three committee members supported an increase. Vanguard projects that monetary policy will stay unchanged until the end of 2026. Ongoing inflation pressures may postpone relief in valuations for U.S. growth stocks with higher multiples.
