NEW YORK, August 13, 2026, 13:23 EDT – Micron Technology shares advanced 6% after China’s Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) entered the top three in the global NAND memory sector.
- Micron stock gained 6.35% to close at $969.15 on Thursday.
- YMTC secured 14% of NAND shipments in the second quarter, moving into the top three.
- Enterprise SSDs accounted for 48% of NAND bit consumption, rising from 26%.
Micron Technology Inc. NASDAQ:MU climbed 6.35% to $969.15 on Thursday, continuing its three-day rebound as buyers re-entered AI-memory names. However, the latest market-share data highlighted a new threat emerging in segments outside the premium market.
Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC) accounted for 14% of worldwide NAND shipments during the second quarter, ranking third in volume after Samsung and SK hynix. Micron dropped in the shipment rankings.
The difference is significant. YMTC holds the fifth spot in NAND revenue, largely due to its focus on consumer products. Micron continues to have a stronger presence in the high-end data-center memory market. The concern is that current high-volume, low-end production could eventually feed into the enterprise segment.
| Q2 2026 NAND shipment position | Volume share | Competitive signal |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Electronics KRX:005930 | 25% | Leads globally |
| SK hynix KRX:000660 | 22% | Holds second place |
| YMTC | 14% | Debuts in top three |
| Micron | Below 14% | Out of top three by shipments |
YMTC increased its shipments by 22% compared to the previous year. The firm’s 267-layer NAND has entered mass production. YMTC is working on products with over 300 layers and expanding its manufacturing capacity in Wuhan.
| NAND demand mix | Q2 2025 | Q2 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proportion of NAND bits for enterprise SSDs | 26% | 48% | +22 percentage points |
| All other applications | 74% | 52% | -22 percentage points |
| Projected enterprise SSD share at year-end | Not applicable | Above 50% | Estimate |
Profits are shifting to servers. Enterprise SSDs accounted for 48% of NAND bit consumption last quarter, up from 26% a year earlier. This transition shields current enterprise providers for now and sets a defined goal for YMTC.
Micron demonstrated its strong buffer with its most recent quarterly results. Revenue for the fiscal third quarter climbed to $41.46 billion from $23.86 billion in the preceding period. Gross margin stood at 84.6%, and adjusted free cash flow totaled $18.3 billion.
| Micron measure | Fiscal Q3 2026 | Fiscal Q2 2026 | Sequential change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $41.46 billion | $23.86 billion | up 73.7% |
| Cloud Memory revenue | $13.77 billion | $7.75 billion | up 77.7% |
| Core Data Center revenue | $11.52 billion | $5.69 billion | up 102.6% |
| Adjusted free cash flow | $18.3 billion | $6.9 billion | up 165.2% |
Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra stated the company’s best-ever quarter underscored “the strategic value of memory in the AI era.” Micron projects revenue of $50 billion, give or take $1 billion, for the fourth quarter. The company anticipates a gross margin of 86%. company release
Micron gained $22 billion in supply commitments from 16 major customers. These deals feature take-or-pay clauses, deposits, and minimum pricing. The arrangements help ease immediate cycle volatility but allow rivals to continue growing.
| Analyst firm | Rating | Target | Date | Change from $969.15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UBS | Buy | $1,625 | August 10 | +67.7% |
| Citi | Buy | $1,150 | August 7 | +18.7% |

| KeyBanc | Overweight | $1,750 | July 20 | +80.6% |
| Raymond James | Outperform | $1,500 | June 25 | +54.8% |
Analysts are overwhelmingly positive, with the consensus showing 41 Buys, five Holds, and no Sell ratings. The average price target stands at $1,501.98, suggesting an approximate 55% upside. However, the spread between the highest and lowest targets is notably broad.
Risks: Memory prices are subject to rapid reversals. Increased Chinese capacity might impact consumer NAND before affecting enterprise items. Export restrictions could hamper YMTC, though limited supply has the potential to prolong Micron’s pricing advantage.
Thursday’s surge reflects expectations for premium-memory growth. However, the volume numbers signal caution. Micron needs to maintain its technology and enterprise margins as China increases its NAND supply.
