Boeing Engineers Turn Down Offer, Strike Looms Amid BA Certification Push

SEATTLE, August 22, 2026, 20:07 PDT

  • Boeing’s four-year proposal was turned down by 64% of its engineers, while 72% of technical workers voted against it.
  • Roughly 17,000 employees have voted to strike once the contract lapses on October 6.
  • Boeing stock declined 7.5% over the past week, increasing the distance to optimistic analyst targets.

Boeing faces added execution risk at the start of the week as its biggest white-collar union voted down a four-year contract proposal and gave its bargaining team strike authorization effective after October 6. The decision followed a 7.5% drop in Boeing’s shares over the week.

The timing takes precedence over the direct cash outlay. Boeing is increasing 737 production as it seeks certification for the 737-10 and 777-9. Engineers are involved in all areas of those programs including design, testing, and production.

A strike cannot commence before October 7. However, investors need to factor in a longer timeframe for both recovery milestones. There are currently no additional talks planned.

The wage standoff can be quantified. Boeing proposed linking a portion of pay increases to inflation, limiting this adjustment to a maximum of 3%. Consumer prices in the Seattle region climbed 4.5% in the twelve months ending in June, creating a 1.5 percentage point shortfall ahead of factoring in additional salary components.

Market positioning had softened before. BA declined every day last week, finishing Friday at $214.20. Shares slipped 0.42% on Friday, as the S&P 500 added 0.43%.

The decline comes despite Boeing’s recent operational improvements. Revenue for the second quarter increased by 8% to $24.56 billion. Free cash flow totaled $631 million, reversing a $200 million outflow in the same period a year ago.

Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg stated that operations had stabilized and major certification programs continued to move forward as scheduled in July. “There is more work ahead in the second half,” he said. This warning now holds greater significance. Boeing

Boeing production engineering chief Ben Nimmergut expressed disappointment. He stated Boeing was enacting its backup plan and reallocating funds that had been set aside for early ratification bonuses.

Wall Street sentiment stays positive. Out of 28 analysts surveyed, the consensus is Buy with an average price target of $274.85. This suggests a potential upside of 28.3% compared to Friday’s closing price.

The disparity between current price and target levels fuels investor uncertainty. Analysts are projecting increased deliveries and stronger cash flow. An extended labor standoff would impact timing, but not alter the $715 billion demand signal.

Risks: The union could agree to updated terms ahead of October, easing the possibility of a strike. On the other hand, a walkout may slow certifications, aircraft deliveries, and the rebound in free cash flow.

The initial test on Monday will be how the stock responds to the vote. A further concrete indication will be if talks start up again. BA’s case for recovery faces a clear deadline in October until that point.

Why BA moved down

The stock fell every session last week. The contract rejection now adds schedule risk to the 737-10 and 777-9 certification campaigns. Friday's -0.42% also lagged the S&P 500 by 0.85 percentage point.

What could reverse it

Renewed talks or revised terms could remove the October overhang. Continued delivery growth and positive free cash flow would support the analyst recovery case.
