Ferguson (NYSE:FERG) surges 9% following S&P 500 addition, prompting an expected $6.7 billion rebalancing move

NEW YORK, August 3, 2026, 11:17 EDT (U.S. market open)

  • Shares of Ferguson rose 9.2% to $255.99 after Friday’s index announcement.
  • An initial proxy estimates gross indexed exposure at approximately $6.69 billion, not counting derivative notional.
  • The August 10 results are set to challenge a valuation that was adjusted following Monday’s rally.

Ferguson Enterprises Inc. rose 9.2% to $255.99 at 11:01 EDT. S&P Dow Jones Indices will include the distributor ahead of the market open on Wednesday. The company will take the spot of Electronic Arts Inc. , which is set for a takeover.

Stock chart for NYSE:FERG

The main concern for investors centers on index-based ownership. S&P’s survey for the end of 2024 reported $8.99 trillion in indexed assets and exchange-traded products. An initial market-cap estimate gives a gross exposure of $6.69 billion. Based on Monday’s share price, this amounts to 26.1 million shares.

The volume is 19.1 times Ferguson’s average over the past 65 days. By 11:01 EDT, just 5.38 million shares had changed hands. The closing auction on Tuesday is expected to be the main event. The adjustment takes effect before trading begins on Wednesday.

The surge far exceeded the movements of key U.S. distributors around 11:01 EDT.

CompanyMonday moveMarket valueTrailing P/E
Ferguson Enterprises Inc. up 9.2%$49.9 billion26.4x
Fastenal Co. gained 1.2%$55.5 billion40.9x
W.W. Grainger Inc. (NYSE:GWW)down 0.3%$65.3 billion37.1x
Watsco Inc. (NYSE:WSO)rose 3.3%$12.9 billion
Core & Main Inc. (NYSE:CNM)climbed 4.8%$9.0 billion

The difference in spread suggests index mechanics are at play rather than a widespread rally among distributors. Barron’s valued Ferguson at just under 21 times its projected earnings, yet that ratio remained lower than Fastenal and Grainger’s valuations.

The baseline calculation intentionally omits assets that are actively benchmarked. It relies on S&P’s asset survey, overall market value, and Ferguson’s intraday price.

Initial S&P 500 representation measureWithout derivative notionalWith derivative notional

Total projected exposure$6.69 billion$9.67 billion

Equivalent of 65 days’ volume19.1 times27.6 times

The difference is significant. The survey identifies an additional $7.16 trillion held in actively benchmarked funds. Managers of these funds are not obligated to mirror every adjustment to the index. The notional value of derivatives also does not equate to direct equity purchases.

The S&P will calculate weight using float-adjusted value. Public float stands at 193.55 million shares out of a total of 193.94 million. Net buying will be offset by existing positions, sampling methods, futures contracts, and arbitrage activity. The figure is subject to revision.

The surge on Monday also adjusted the valuation. Figures are based on the GF Value model provided in the link, along with consensus estimates from analysts.

The increase in price boosted equity value by approximately $4.2 billion. This represents 63% of the $6.69 billion base exposure benchmark. The move also reduced the consensus-target upside by 10.3 percentage points.

Income support has weakened following the surge. GuruFocus reported a 30% payout ratio and a 9.4% growth in dividends over three years. However, the indicated yield declined to 1.39% from 1.52%.

Operations continue to outperform what the housing environment would indicate. Ferguson’s results for the March quarter serve as the benchmark.

In the first quarter, U.S. residential revenue declined by 1%, while non-residential revenue increased by 8%. Chief Executive Kevin Murphy pointed to “strong non-residential revenue growth.” Murphy added the “economic environment remains uncertain.” Q4 Capital

In May, management maintained its guidance for 2026. Sales are projected to rise in the low- to mid-single-digit range. Adjusted operating margin is still forecast between 9.4% and 9.8%.

The following test is set for August 10. Analysts expect revenue of $8.7 billion and per-share earnings of $3.30. The results will need to justify the increased multiple.

The $1.6 billion purchase of FloWorks introduces a new element. Ferguson anticipates approximately $45 million in cost savings. FloWorks is projected to contribute around $1 billion in revenue for 2025. The acquisition expands Ferguson’s presence in data centers and the semiconductor sector.

The risks are evident. Passive demand might be already accounted for. A downturn in housing or underperformance by FloWorks could eliminate the index premium.

Index performance drives demand. Sustained earnings are required for lasting impact.

Further analysis

What level of upside are analysts on Wall Street still anticipating?
At 10:59 a.m. ET, the S&P 500 stood at 7,577.46, up 1.17% but still 0.6% shy of its all-time high. A May Reuters poll showed a year-end median forecast of 7,620. June estimates from JPMorgan and Citi now stand at 7,800 and 8,100, respectively, suggesting a potential gain of about 3% to 7%.
Do earnings provide sufficient backing for the index?
FactSet forecasts earnings to rise by 29.1% and revenue to increase by 11.1% in 2026. A 47.4% headline earnings jump in Q2 is driven by significant investment valuation gains. Removing Alphabet and Amazon from the equation, Q2 earnings growth stands at 28.8%. July saw full-year EPS estimates go up 3.2% to $351.33. The profit outlook continues to appear robust.
Are valuations still elevated?
The forward 12-month P/E is 19.6, under the five-year norm of 19.9, but higher than the ten-year average of 19.0. The multiple decreased from 20.4 as EPS projections climbed 3.3%. Valuation appears reasonable as long as those projections persist.
What might end the rally?
Rates and oil continue to pose the main short-term threats. The Fed kept its benchmark rate at 3.50%-3.75%, with three policymakers favouring an increase. Economists expect Friday’s payroll report to show 83,000 new jobs and unemployment at 4.3%. The likelihood of a rate rise in September was 64% on Friday. Brent crude declined more than 5.5% on Monday amid contested reports of U.S.-Iran negotiations. Should talks collapse, inflation risks could escalate swiftly.

U.S. index futures reopen at 18:00 ET

This is the clearest scheduled U.S.-market price-discovery point today and can transmit weekend news into equity-index futures before Monday's cash session.

#2

New Zealand retail sales at 18:45 ET

The Q2 retail package can move NZD and regional risk sentiment. Spillover to U.S. assets is usually secondary unless the result is unusually large.

#3

No scheduled domestic U.S. data or corporate reports

The absence of U.S. releases, earnings, IPO pricings and split events leaves fewer scheduled catalysts, increasing the relative importance of weekend headlines and positioning at the futures reopen.
