Internet Access in the Micronesian Region: Status, Challenges, and Outlook (2025)

The Micronesian region comprises the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Palau, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, and Kiribati. In 2010 the HANTRU-1 fiber cable reached Majuro and Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, branching from Pohnpei to FSM, marking the region’s first international fiber backbone. Palau connected to the SEA-US cable in 2017 and is slated to receive a second Echo cable spur by 2025 to boost redundancy. The East Micronesia Cable (EMC) project began in 2022 and is on track for completion by late 2025, linking Nauru, Tarawa, and Kosrae via FSM’s Pohnpei hub. Current State of Samoa’s Internet Infrastructure Samoa’s internet infrastructure has transformed significantly in the past decade. The backbone of connectivity is now fiber-optic submarine cables. The first major cable, Tui-Samoa, went live in 2018, linking Samoa to Suva, Fiji (with branching units to Wallis & Futuna and Samoa’s second island, Savai’i) ssccsamoa.com ssccsamoa.com. This cable dramatically increased international bandwidth and reduced Samoa’s dependence on satellites for backhaul.
