Upwork shares drop 20% as AI automation and Google search updates hit guidance

Palo Alto, August 10, 2026, 18:46 EDT

  • Shares of Upwork dropped 19.9% to $7.87 in after-hours trade, wiping out roughly $242 million in market capitalization.
  • Revenue in the second quarter surpassed expectations, though executives lowered the outlook for full-year revenue and profit.
  • Accelerated automation of basic tasks and reduced referrals from Google search prompted the reset.
  • Demand tied to AI continued to increase, further expanding the divide between lower-complexity tasks and more valuable projects.

Shares of Upwork Inc. dropped 19.9% in after-hours trading on Monday. The freelancing platform lowered its outlook for 2026, citing that the rise of artificial intelligence has replaced simpler tasks, while changes to Google search led to fewer customer referrals.

The decline occurred even though second-quarter revenue slightly exceeded expectations. Market participants concentrated on softer growth prospects and a more significant reduction in profit outlook.

The difference is significant. Upwork continues to see growth in higher-value AI projects, yet it is losing lower-complexity work at a pace that outstrips the arrival of new jobs in that category.

After the close, the share price stood only 43 cents higher than its 52-week minimum of $7.44. The market capitalisation calculations are based on Upwork’s 123.52 million shares in circulation. Regular session trading volume hit 6.98 million shares, over double the stock’s recent average.

Revenue for the second quarter declined by 2% to reach $191.7 million, surpassing analysts’ projection of $190.0 million. Adjusted earnings were 41 cents per share, above the expected 34 cents.

The blend strengthened despite a declining marketplace. Gross services volume per active client hit an eighth consecutive record, and adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 33% from 29%. In contrast, free cash flow declined.

“As lower-complexity tasks are automated, we are now observing a rising need for advanced AI expertise, higher-value projects, and the emergence of new types of work within both SMB and Enterprise segments,” Chief Executive Hayden Brown said. Upwork

Gross services volume linked to AI climbed 22% year-on-year, reaching an annualized run rate of $330 million. Business Plus saw its volume jump 174%, and AI strategy and consulting increased by 51%.

The issue is found elsewhere. Brown noted the quarter saw “an acceleration in the AI automation of very low complexity work and further deterioration on Google SEO, especially notable in the non-brand channel.” Earnings-call transcript

Management currently expects increased automation and no recovery in the labor market during this year. The company also intends to allocate an additional $5 million to $10 million for marketing expenses in the second half.

Upwork’s profit forecast declined more sharply than its revenue guidance at the midpoint, highlighting softer demand and increased marketing expenses. The company set its earlier guidance ranges in May.

Wall Street targets reflected prior forecasts as of Monday, since the outlook downgrade had not been factored in. The following five recommendations were released before the report and serve as context, not updated assessments.

The group included two buy ratings and three hold recommendations. The average target price stood at $12.88, representing a premium of roughly 64% to the after-hours share price. That difference could shrink as analysts update their models following the guidance reduction.

Risks: Upwork may see a further decline in low-end jobs if automation speeds up. Search traffic might continue to lag, and increased marketing spend may fail to reignite active client growth. Rising demand for AI consulting could provide some relief, though when that benefit arrives is unclear.

Upwork forecasts third-quarter revenue between $176 million and $184 million, trailing the previous quarter’s total. The company’s ability to keep active client numbers steady and maintain a 33% adjusted EBITDA margin will indicate if Monday’s adjustment was adequate.

Further analysis

What caused Upwork shares to decline even after surpassing second-quarter forecasts?
Management lowered its 2026 forecast due to increased AI automation of low-complexity tasks and fewer customer referrals following changes to Google search. The updated revenue midpoint stands at $740 million, $35 million below the earlier midpoint. The adjusted EBITDA midpoint dropped by $25 million to $230 million. These downward revisions outweighed the small revenue beat and stronger adjusted earnings.
Is artificial intelligence benefiting or negatively impacting Upwork?
It is performing both actions. Gross services volume linked to AI climbed by 22%, achieving an annualized run rate of $330 million. Work related to AI strategy and consulting increased by 51%. Meanwhile, automation replaced more basic projects. The key question for investors is if the growth of high-value AI work can outpace losses in lower-end volumes.
Which operating metrics are most important following the selloff?
The number of active clients declined by 4% to 763,000, as gross services volume per active client increased 5% to a record $5,230. This illustrates a smaller group of clients accounting for higher spending per user. Investors will want reassurance that Upwork can sustain its client base stability while maintaining its 33% adjusted EBITDA margin.
What could drive the next move in Upwork's stock?
Performance in the third quarter will be the next key indicator. Upwork projects revenue between $176 million and $184 million, with adjusted EBITDA anticipated in the range of $50 million to $54 million. Developments in search traffic, trends among active clients, and increased demand for high-value AI services will help determine if the updated forecasts are cautious or signal a more significant slowdown.
