Southern cash cattle sales from last week held at $182-$185 per hundredweight, while northern trade ranged $184-$188. Feeder cattle futures showed mixed performance: August contracts dropped 37 cents nearing expiration, but others rose $1.30 to $2. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up $1.13 at $242.83 on August 23. USDA reported boxed beef prices higher, with Choice cuts up 38 cents to $316.28 per hundredweight and Select rising $3.48 to $303.67. Federally inspected cattle slaughter slightly declined to 116,000 head Monday, down 1,000 from last week and 9,036 from last year. Auction demand was moderate to good, with prices stable to slightly lower on steers.
