Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) Stock Confronts $3.25 Billion Cash Drain After All-Time Delivery High

NEW YORK, July 20, 2026, 5:07 p.m. EDT

  • U.S. markets ended Monday trading with Tesla shares at $369.57, a decrease of 3.0%. Last week, the stock fell by 6.6%.
  • Initial projection: Company-gathered consensus expects a negative free cash flow of $3.25 billion for the quarter.
  • Tesla is set to announce earnings on Wednesday after markets close. Options are pricing in a swing of about 6% in either direction.

Tesla heads into Wednesday’s earnings call after achieving record deliveries but is anticipated to report negative cash flow. Analysts project a preliminary second-quarter shortfall of $3.25 billion.

This stands out as the key test for the stock. Tesla’s own compiled consensus shows capital expenditures at $6.70 billion, while projected operating cash flow is just $3.45 billion.

Cash flow would show a significant reversal. Free cash flow for the first quarter stood at a positive $1.44 billion. The shift from one quarter to the next would total $4.70 billion.

Volume climbed at a higher rate than sales. Deliveries increased by 34% compared to the previous quarter. The consensus for revenue growth stands at 23%, indicating a lower average revenue per vehicle delivered.

The ratio serves as a reporting proxy rather than reflecting an average selling price. Tesla’s second-quarter financial data are aggregated sell-side estimates and are not endorsed by the company.

The proxy factors in more than just vehicle sale prices. Automotive revenue also reflects leasing and regulatory-credit earnings. Nevertheless, the decrease increases pressure on Wednesday’s margin announcement.

Analysts forecast gross margin at 19.5%, down 1.6 percentage points from the previous quarter. Operating margin is projected at 5.4%.

Skepticism is evident in the stock’s performance. Tesla dropped 6.6% last week and slid another 3.0% on Monday. The S&P 500 declined by just 0.18% during Monday’s trading.

Even so, Monday’s closing price represents roughly 296 times projected 2026 GAAP earnings, based on $369.57 and Tesla’s $1.25 estimate as compiled by the company.

The focus on that valuation extends interest past existing vehicle sales. In March, Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco described the scaling of robotaxis as Tesla’s “most important catalyst.” According to the bank, current investor discussions are primarily centered on AI spending. The automotive segment continued to post robust operational results, as deliveries outpaced production by 28,368 vehicles. This indicates a reduction in completed inventory. Deployments of energy storage amounted to 13.5 GWh.

Initial projection: The consensus expects revenue of $27.58 billion and adjusted earnings per share at 55 cents. Investors are watching for a capital expenditure timeline and proof that AI-related investments will generate returns.

General Motors Company is set to release results on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. EDT. The company’s earnings call could offer an initial look at demand and incentives in the U.S. Tesla is scheduled to report the next day, with a webcast starting at 5:30 p.m. EDT.

Options are indicating a possible swing of about 6% in either direction by Friday. Based on Monday’s closing price, this corresponds to a range from roughly $347 to $392.

Risks: Capital expenditures may fluctuate from one quarter to another, affecting the timing sensitivity of cash-burn projections. Improved pricing or quicker advancement in robotaxi development could support share gains. On the other hand, postponed timelines, price cuts or regulatory issues could increase losses.

The challenge is clear. Tesla needs record deliveries to protect margins and support its AI development.
