S&P 500 hits record, chip stocks jump — jobs report and Trump tariff case set up next market move

The S&P 500 closed at a record on Friday as Broadcom and other chip stocks kept Wall Street climbing after a softer-than-expected U.S. jobs report. The index rose 0.65% to 6,966.28, while the Nasdaq gained 0.82% to 23,671.35 and the Dow added 0.48% to 49,504.07; the PHLX semiconductor index, which tracks major chipmakers, jumped 2.7% to a record. “On the overall AI theme, investors are getting granular,” said Zachary Hill at Horizon Investments, as Lam Research surged after Mizuho lifted its price target and Vistra rallied on a power deal with Meta. The labor data mattered because it set the tone for the next Fed meeting and for how traders price rate cuts in 2026. Nonfarm payrolls — jobs outside farming — rose by 50,000 in December, below economists’ forecast of 60,000, after a downwardly revised 56,000 in November. The unemployment rate dipped to 4.4% and wages rose 3.8% from a year earlier, and “all roads lead to the unemployment rate … it should douse the Fed’s recent urgency,” Fitch Ratings’ Olu Sonola said.

Boeing stock jumps late after FAA clears 737 MAX 10 for next flight-test phase

NEW YORK, Jan 9, 2026, 18:13 EST — After-hours Boeing shares jumped $7.04, or 3.1%, to $234.53 in after-hours trading Friday, after the Federal Aviation Administration gave the 737 MAX 10 the green light to enter its second phase of flight testing, according to a source familiar with the program. The MAX 10, Boeing’s largest 737 model, holds over 1,200 orders and battles Airbus’s A321neo in the market. However, an engine deicing issue — which prevents ice buildup — continues to cloud the outlook for both the MAX 10 and the smaller MAX 7. “It’s progress, but until the MAX 10 is certified, it’s not,” said Scott Hamilton of the Leeham Company. During the session, Boeing’s shares fluctuated between $227.14 and $235.11.

  • Securitize starts NYSE trade as SECZ, tokenizes shares on Solana and Avalanche
July 7, 2026, 3:47 AM EDT. Securitize started trading on the NYSE as SECZ on July 2, 2026, while at the same time it put its public stock on the Solana and Avalanche blockchains. The move, according to the digital asset platform, shows confidence in how blockchain fits into capital markets after years of work on regulation. CEO Carlos Domingo said this could be a model for other public companies. He said tokenization could make shareholder ownership better by turning regular stock into digital tokens on blockchains. Securitize said it plans to keep building regulated infrastructure for tokenized securities to push blockchain into regular capital markets.
