Kohl’s Michigan Store Closure Puts Fresh Pressure on Turnaround as Traffic Stays Weak
Kohl’s has closed its Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, store, removing it from its locator after a March 14 shutdown. The chain now lists 44 Michigan stores, down from 46 in 2016. Kohl’s reported a 2.8% drop in comparable sales and a 5% decline in foot traffic last quarter, while rival Ross Stores saw traffic rise nearly 12%. CEO Michael Bender said customers are seeking value amid financial pressure.
