Natural gas prices cool after storm spike — EQT and gas stocks hold up as traders eye storage

February U.S. natural gas futures fell about 6% to $6.53/mmBtu ahead of contract expiration Wednesday, following a weather-driven spike earlier in the week. Output in the Lower 48 states averaged 106.9 bcfd in January, down from December’s record. EQT shares rose 1.8% in early trading. LNG and crude exports from the Gulf Coast briefly halted over the weekend before resuming.

Natural gas price surges toward $5 as Arctic blast flips forecasts; UNG, EQT jump

February Henry Hub natural gas futures soared 24.78% to $4.875/mmBtu Wednesday, capping a two-day, 57% rally as forecasts turned sharply colder. Natural gas price tumbles today on warmer forecasts, light storage draw; UNG, EQT slide

U.S. natural gas futures dropped nearly 7% midday Wednesday to about $3.70/mmBtu, pressured by warmer January forecasts and a smaller-than-expected EIA storage withdrawal of 38 Bcf. The United States Natural Gas Fund fell 6.5%, while gas producers EQT, Antero, and Range Resources also declined. LNG exporter Cheniere was little changed. Traders are watching for updated weather models and LNG feedgas flows.
