Dow Jones Wraps Session With 150-Point Gain, Two Stocks Account for Most of Move

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 149.68 points, or 0.29%, to 52,637.09 on Friday. But most of that gain came from two stocks. Caterpillar and Nvidia drove about 127 points together—about 85% of the Dow’s move—using the index’s per-dollar sensitivity of roughly 5.94 points for each $1 change in a component.

Nvidia Led S&P 500 Friday Gains With Nearly 70%, Small Caps Dropped

NVDA was behind about 0.31 percentage point of the S&P 500’s move on Friday, according to estimates, or around 70% of the total gain. Big tech, still led by the main AI play, drove the latest record run. The S&P 500 finished up 0.44% at 7,577.05. The Dow climbed 0.37% to end at 52,682.39. The Nasdaq closed 0.32% higher at 26,290.19. The Russell 2000 dropped 0.46% to 2,978.75.

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock surges, S&P 500 hides size of rally

Nvidia was up 3.1% at $209.14 as of 11:52 a.m. EDT Friday, pushing its market cap to $5.10 trillion. The gain tacked on about $155 billion since Thursday’s finish, coming as one of its biggest customers detailed plans to scale back use of outside chips.

Judge Sparkle Sooknanan signed off on the SEC’s settlement with Elon Musk, clearing the way for the deal over his slow disclosure of buying Twitter shares. But in her order, Sooknanan flagged concerns, saying courts aren’t just “a rubber stamp.” She pointed out the terms: a Musk trust puts up $1.5 million, while the SEC said Musk’s delay let him pocket $150 million.
