NEW YORK, August 9, 2026, 10:02 EDT — U.S. cash equity markets closed.
- Nvidia closed Friday at $223.96, up 2.27% for the session and 11.6% for the week.
- Preliminary consensus fiscal-2027 earnings rose only 0.2% over one month. The fiscal second-quarter estimate was unchanged.
- July inflation data and three AI-infrastructure earnings reports lead the week ahead. Nvidia reports on August 26.
Nvidia added about $562 billion in market value last week. That was its largest weekly increase on record. Shares climbed 11.6% and finished Friday at $223.96.
Yet the earnings bar barely moved. Fiscal-2027 earnings consensus reached $9.00 a share, against $8.98 one month earlier. The preliminary second-quarter estimate remained $2.08.
That split is the investor signal. The data suggest buyers repriced future AI demand, rather than near-term profit forecasts. Customer commitments carried more weight than estimate revisions.
| Price and estimate comparison | Latest | Comparison point | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share price | $223.96 | $200.75 on July 31 | +11.6% |
| FY2027 EPS consensus — preliminary | $9.00 | $8.98 one month ago | +0.2% |
| Q2 FY2027 EPS consensus — preliminary | $2.08 | $2.08 one month ago | 0.0% |
| Price/FY2027 EPS, using current $9.00 estimate | 24.9 times | 22.3 times at July 31 price | +11.6% |
Using the current $9.00 consensus as a constant denominator, Nvidia’s multiple rose to 24.9 times. It stood at 22.3 times using the prior Friday’s price. The valuation expanded almost point for point with the stock.
Customer evidence helped bridge that gap. Space Exploration Technologies Corp. NASDAQ:SPCX CEO Elon Musk said SpaceX had “decided to build exclusively on Nvidia.” He called the Vera Rubin architecture “the best.” MarketWatch
SpaceX also expects a “significant percentage” of Nvidia’s GPUs next year. Its AI capital spending reached $15.83 billion during the June quarter. Those figures reflect customer plans, not Nvidia revenue guidance. Reuters
The chip rally was broad. Broadcom Inc. NASDAQ:AVGO rose 9.9%, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited NYSE:TSM gained 3.9%. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. NASDAQ:AMD added only 1.5%.
| Security | Role in AI supply chain | August 7 close | Weekly return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | AI accelerators and systems | $223.96 | +11.6% |
| Broadcom NASDAQ:AVGO | Custom chips and networking | $427.76 | +9.9% |
| PHLX Semiconductor Index | Chip-sector benchmark | 12,356.79 | +9.2% |
| Nasdaq Composite | Technology-heavy benchmark | 26,690.62 | +5.2% |
| TSMC ADR NYSE:TSM | Advanced-chip manufacturing | $420.04 | +3.9% |
| AMD NASDAQ:AMD | CPUs and AI accelerators | $483.36 | +1.5% |
AMD’s modest weekly gain masked a sharp post-results setback. Its $13 billion third-quarter revenue outlook exceeded consensus. Investors still demanded a larger AI payoff, while SpaceX’s supplier decision widened the narrative gap.
The analyst distribution remains overwhelmingly positive. Current WSJ consensus data show 61 Buy or Overweight recommendations. That compares with 65 three months earlier, while Hold ratings declined to two.
| Analyst recommendation | Current | One month ago | Three months ago |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy | 54 | 55 | 57 |
| Overweight | 7 | 7 | 8 |
| Hold | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Underweight | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Sell | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Consensus | Buy | Buy | Buy |
The median analyst target is $300. That implies about 34% upside from Friday’s close. The low target of $180 implies roughly 20% downside, leaving a wide valuation range.
The immediate test is macroeconomic. July CPI arrives Wednesday at 08:30 EDT. A preliminary Reuters poll expects 3.4% headline inflation and 2.5% core inflation. Strategist Matthew Miskin called the market’s condition “inflation anxiety.” Reuters
CoreWeave, Inc. NASDAQ:CRWV, Cisco Systems, Inc. NASDAQ:CSCO and Applied Materials, Inc. NASDAQ:AMAT also report. Their commentary will test cloud demand, networking orders and chip-equipment investment across Nvidia’s ecosystem.
| Date and time, EDT | Event | Relevance to Nvidia |
|---|---|---|
| August 11, 17:00 | CoreWeave Q2 results | GPU demand, financing and capacity deployment |
| August 12, 08:30 | July CPI | Treasury yields and technology valuations |
| August 12, 16:30 | Cisco fiscal-Q4 results | AI-networking orders and data-centre demand |
| August 13, 08:30 | July PPI | Input inflation and rate expectations |
| August 13, 16:30 | Applied Materials fiscal-Q3 results | Advanced-chip equipment spending |
| August 14 | U.S. retail-sales report | Growth expectations and bond yields |
Risks: Nvidia now carries a higher multiple without a matching near-term estimate reset. Hot inflation, rising yields, customer spending delays, export restrictions or weak August 26 guidance could reverse part of the weekly gain.
The next company-specific checkpoint comes August 26 at 14:00 PT. Until then, investors are trading evidence of future demand. The earnings estimates still have to catch up.
