The decline wiped roughly KRW 135 trillion from the company’s market capitalization, bringing the stock down 33.9% from its 52-week high in June. Nevertheless, analyst consensus forecasts remain markedly optimistic.

The KOSPI ended the session down 5.80% at 6,471.17. Overseas investors posted net sales of KRW 3.50 trillion, and institutions offloaded KRW 1.32 trillion. The sharp drop activated a five-minute sell-side program trading sidecar.

“The market dropped sharply due to net selling from foreign investors and the ongoing outflow of institutional funds,” Daishin Securities analyst Lee Kyung-min said. Individuals took in KRW 4.64 trillion of net sales.

Rising global yields triggered the latest valuation drop. The U.S. 30-year yield climbed to roughly 5.33%, the peak since 2007. Brent crude advanced past $91, with risks involving Iran lingering. Memory stock prices remain under strain from discount-rate concerns and ongoing uncertainty about AI capital expenditure.

Seoul is encountering new tensions with Washington. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated U.S. pressure includes issues related to Iran and South Korea’s postponed $350 billion investment commitment. The two allies have reduced their annual joint military exercises to five days, down from 11.

Samsung reported robust operating results, with second-quarter revenue at KRW 171.5 trillion. Operating profit increased to KRW 89.5 trillion, and earnings per share stood at KRW 10,849.

The memory division has entered into multi-year supply agreements with the five biggest data centre operators. Executive vice president Jaejune Kim stated that nearly all customers are seeking multi-year contracts. Samsung’s goal is for around two-thirds of longer-term memory production to be secured under such agreements.

The range of target prices is broad, highlighting intense debate instead of consensus. Samsung’s closing price of KRW 247,500 stands beneath the lowest average midpoint among targets, yet remains higher than the most pessimistic target.

Risks: Rising bond yields have potential to shrink semiconductor valuations more. Oil-based inflation risks eroding demand and pushing up manufacturing expenses. Any slowdown in AI investment could negatively affect memory prices. Additional markdowns may result from U.S.–Korea trade or security tensions.

The next challenge arrives soon. Samsung is set to hold an investor tour on August 20. Investors will watch for signs that extended contracts could safeguard margins if risk appetite shifts.
