Turkish Airlines has added Timișoara to its network, bringing the carrier’s Romanian destinations to four and boosting total weekly flights in the country to 47. The new Istanbul–Timișoara service runs five times per week, the airline said.
This shift is significant for Turkish, plugging a new route into its Istanbul hub and marking the end of Timișoara airport’s push to land another network carrier. In a January update, the airport listed the start of Turkish Airlines service on the Timișoara-Istanbul run—from April 2026—as a commercial win.
“Romania continues to be one of the strategically important markets for Turkish Airlines in Eastern Europe,” Chief Executive Bilal Eksi said. He mentioned the carrier is counting on the new route to boost both trade and tourism in the region. TravelBiz
Flights took off April 1, operating evenings on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, plus morning runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays, according to Turkish Airlines’ published schedule. The airline pitches the route as connecting Timișoara to its sprawling network of 358 destinations via Istanbul.
Executives from both the airline and the airport gathered for the inauguration at Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport, according to the carrier. With this move, Turkish Airlines adds Timișoara to its Romanian network, which already covers Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Constanța.
Turkish is stepping into Timișoara where Istanbul service is nothing new. According to the airport’s second-half 2025 report, Animawings was already flying regular routes to Istanbul. Wizz Air had been ramping up its base at the airport, and Lufthansa kept running flights to Munich.
The move points to Turkish targeting transfer traffic, not just local flyers. With Timișoara in the mix, the carrier gains flexibility: it can route Romanian passengers over Istanbul instead of just through Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, or Constanța for its network connections.
Still, the route comes with its share of risks. The airport’s own carrier breakdown suggests as much: Animawings is already flying Istanbul, and Wizz Air’s expanding budget operations could weigh on fares if demand slips.
Even so, the move plants Turkish Airlines deeper in western Romania, adding one more spoke to its Istanbul hub. The carrier called Romania a strategically important market in Eastern Europe.
