Heathrow Third Runway: Ancient Village Faces Demolition as UK Backs £49bn Airport Expansion
The UK government has approved Heathrow Airport’s plan for a third runway, requiring demolition of much of Harmondsworth and all of Longford. The £49bn project would increase capacity to 150 million passengers and 756,000 flights a year. Construction would cross the M25 and involve major road and rail changes. Ministers say the scheme could open by 2035 if it meets environmental and economic tests.
