Nikkei 225 closed down 68.77 points at 50,344.10 on Wednesday, while TOPIX fell 15.88 points to 3,407.37 as a stronger yen pressured exporters. Toyota dropped 1.8%, Sony slid 1.9%. Chip stocks outperformed, with Advantest up 2.5% and Screen Holdings surging 10%. Trading was thin ahead of Christmas, with the dollar in the mid-155s yen.
