NEW YORK, July 29, 2026, 14:59 EDT — U.S. cash markets have opened.
- Bloomberg has reached an agreement to acquire Canoe Intelligence. The financial details of the deal were not revealed.
- Canoe handles upwards of 1.5 million documents each month, covering over 44,000 funds.
- Canoe’s total number of processed funds is roughly 88% of Bloomberg’s figure. The extent of overlap between the two is not specified.
Bloomberg said on Wednesday it will buy Canoe Intelligence, an artificial intelligence-driven data processing firm focused on private markets. Canoe offers workflow functionality that will integrate into Bloomberg’s current platform.
Bloomberg monitors over 50,000 private funds. Canoe transforms fund documents into organized data covering cash-flows, positions, and holdings. The transaction strengthens Bloomberg’s private markets capabilities.
Based on the reported figures, Canoe’s processed-fund coverage represents approximately 88% of Bloomberg’s total fund count. The firms did not release details regarding overlap or methodologies used to count funds. This ratio serves as an indication rather than a cumulative measure.
| Measure | Disclosed scale | Derived investor read |
|---|---|---|
| Bloomberg private funds | Over 50,000 | Main comparison universe |
| Canoe processed funds | Above 44,000 | Close to 88% of Bloomberg’s tally |
| Canoe documents each month | Over 1.5 million | Roughly 34 per fund using headline totals |
| BlackRock NYSE:BLK/Preqin fund coverage | 210,000 | Canoe represents around 21% of this figure |
Basic estimates based on reported minimum amounts. Definitions vary, and it is unclear whether funds overlap.
Bloomberg did not reveal the acquisition price, Canoe’s revenue, or when the deal is expected to close. The agreement still requires standard regulatory clearance.
The firms have been trialing the connection since April. Canoe delivers private fund data to Bloomberg PORT Enterprise via FIGI identifiers, which decreases the need for manual mapping and data input.
PORT Enterprise counts over 800 clients. Lupita Breland, a manager with the Arizona State Retirement System, said the integration had “eliminated hours of operational work.” Canoe
Bloomberg intends to integrate the data with portfolio risk, cash management, and look-through of holdings. The company is also seeking private-fund screening, benchmarking, and comparative analysis.
The integrated data will support ASKB, Bloomberg’s conversational AI platform. Chief Executive Vlad Kliatchko stated “private markets are primed to undergo a similar transformation.” Canoe
BlackRock’s acquisition of Preqin is the closest reported valuation reference. The company bought Preqin for approximately $3.2 billion, around 13 times Preqin’s projected recurring revenue for 2024. The deal was finalized in March 2025.
Preqin’s coverage extends to 210,000 funds, almost fivefold Canoe’s processed record total. The figures are measured differently: Preqin supplies comprehensive market data, while Canoe focuses on permissioned records after investments.
BlackRock shares rose 0.3% as of 14:43 EDT. The modest change provided no clear indication regarding Bloomberg’s private deal.
The investor focus centers on workflow integration. Bloomberg is able to tie together intake, identifiers, analytics and AI within a unified platform. This may increase client reliance, though additional revenue benefits have not been measured.
Risks persist. Overlapping data is not well defined, AI extraction accuracy is essential, and obtaining client permissions could delay integration. Return-on-investment analysis is limited by undisclosed deal terms.
The strategic rationale is more evident than the financials. With Bloomberg yet to reveal the price or Canoe’s revenue, investors can assess the product strategy but not the expected return.
