Samsung’s Shares Surge 9.5%, Market Value Jump Tops 100 Trillion-Won Shareholder Package

SEOUL, August 21, 2026, 02:45 KST — Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. saw its market capitalization rise by around KRW 137.5 trillion on Thursday, surpassing the widely reported figure of its announced shareholder-return plan.

  • Samsung finished up 9.49% at KRW 271,000 on August 20.
  • Media outlets report that the proposed return package exceeds KRW 100 trillion.
  • The board’s decision and the composition of the payment have not been confirmed.

The math is significant. Thursday’s surge factored in more than just the cash headline. Investors seem to be valuing a clearer capital-allocation message, beyond simply a special dividend.

Samsung is expected to seek board approval for the package before the end of the month. The plan could surpass KRW 100 trillion and features a special dividend. As reported by MoneyToday, 50% of free cash flow would be distributed to shareholders. Samsung did not respond to a request for comment.

The 50% rule has been in place for some time. Samsung’s confirmed 2024–2026 plan already allocates 50% of free cash flow and includes annual regular dividends of KRW 9.8 trillion. What is new is the overall scale of the program, its timing, and the potential for a special distribution.

This difference accounts for the market’s reaction. Samsung recently announced it is evaluating sustainable methods to improve returns. Portfolio manager Richard Clode cautioned that maintaining returns close to 50% might result in an “incredibly inefficient balance sheet.” Reuters analysis

The movement in the stock underscores the importance of execution. Thursday’s session recovered the majority of Wednesday’s decline. Still, Samsung is trading 27.6% under its 52-week peak of KRW 374,500. Investors continue to question how long AI-related investment will persist.

Strong cash flow underpins the payout outlook. Revenue in the second quarter stood at KRW 171.5 trillion. Operating profit amounted to KRW 89.5 trillion, and the semiconductor unit posted KRW 89.2 trillion. Both figures set new company records.

Additional support comes from newfound pricing strength. Samsung has increased prices for select advanced foundry services by as much as 15%, according to sources speaking to Reuters. U.S. and Chinese clients have driven robust demand. The foundry unit has reported losses since 2022.

Samsung’s implied valuation stands at 12.06 times trailing earnings, a relatively modest level. The stock offers a 0.62% indicated dividend yield. While a special dividend could increase the cash yield, this would depend on the board granting approval and specifying payment details.

Samsung’s upcoming board meeting, anticipated by late August, is the next milestone. Investors are looking for clarity on three points: the covered period, the size of the special dividend, and whether a buyback is included. These elements will show if the plan delivers new value per share or simply advances distributions already set out.

Markets this week remain alert to shifts in global bond yields and cues about AI capital expenditure. Samsung traded 26.1 million shares on Thursday, falling short of its 29.5 million average. A larger reaction is possible once the board makes its decision.

Risks: The plan has not been formally confirmed. Should the package be approved at a reduced size, with greater emphasis on dividends, or face delays, the rally could be undone. There is also the potential for memory prices, foundry utilization, and AI-related orders to decline rapidly.

What decides the next move

1 · Covered periodA KRW 100tn multi-year plan carries a different yield than a near-term distribution.
2 · Payment mixA special dividend gives cash now. A cancelled buyback changes per-share ownership.
3 · Board confirmationMonth-end approval is reported, not final. Execution now matters more than the headline.
