Egypt’s “Suez Canal on Rails”: Track-Laying Begins on the High-Speed Rail Megaproject Linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean
Crews have started laying tracks east of Cairo for Egypt’s first high-speed electrified rail line, the 660-kilometer Green Line linking Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean. The project is part of a planned 2,000-kilometer national network, with stations under construction in major cities and desert areas. Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir calls it a “new Suez Canal on rails.”
