Shenzhen stocks finish the week higher — but ChiNext slides as Beijing policy week looms

Shenzhen’s main index slipped Friday, with the Shenzhen Component Index giving up 0.06% to close at 14,495.09. The ChiNext Index, which tracks growth stocks in a Nasdaq-like fashion, dropped 1.04%. Minor metals, along with lead and zinc names, posted the strongest gains, while papermakers and electronic chemical shares lagged behind. Combined turnover in Shanghai and Shenzhen hit almost 2.49 trillion yuan.

UK picks Barclays executive Katharine Braddick to run Bank of England banking watchdog

Britain tapped Barclays executive Katharine Braddick on Friday to take over as the Bank of England's deputy governor for prudential regulation, handing her the reins at the Prudential Regulation Authority. “Katharine Braddick is an accomplished pro-business leader with the experience to keep our financial system safe while backing the investment and lending that drives growth,” finance minister Rachel Reeves said. Braddick’s five-year term begins July 1, succeeding Sam Woods. She joined Barclays in 2022, following stints at the Treasury, the former Financial Services Authority, and the Association of British Insurers.

US crude oil inventories rose by 2.603 million barrels for the week ending July 17, while Strategic Petroleum Reserve volumes declined 5.1 million barrels to 316.5 million, marking their lowest level in more than 43 years. Brent crude gained 2.40% to reach $91.36, with WTI up 2.46% at $84.51, as concerns over US/Iran tensions drove prices. Gasoline stocks fell, distillate inventories increased, and Cushing levels moved lower.
